Tar Heel Women Win Multiple Awards at UNC Rammy Awards

The UNC athletics program celebrated its fifth annual UNC Rammy’s awards Monday night in Chapel Hill. Awards were given to Tar Heel athletes who proved exemplary in athletic achievement, academic excellence, and community engagement throughout the 2016-17 school year.

“We celebrate successes every day, but to be able to take one night and look back really underscores what a successful year it has been for Carolina Athletics,” said UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. “In addition to all of our athletic accomplishments, we recognized many of the great achievements our students-athletes have made academically and in the community. The way our student-athletes represent Carolina makes us all proud.”

The UNC women’s swimming and diving team walked away with three awards Monday night. Leading the way was senior Hellen Moffitt, who won the Rammy for Record-Breaking Performance. She took down UNC record in all three of her best events (100 fly, 100 back, 200 back), and had an excellent NCAA performance. She doubled up with the 100 fly and 100 back on day 3, becoming the first Tar Heel swimmer to go All-American in two events on the same day since 1981.

Abby Fisher and Katie McKay, also seniors, took home awards as well. Fisher earned the Mildred McCaskill Award, which honors excellence in athletics, academics, and community engagement. McKay, meanwhile, received the ACC Scholar-Athlete award, given to the male and female senior with the highest GPA in any sport.

Way to get in the picture, John Leonard. Those are those fully-expensed tickets to Trials you were comped, right behind lane 4.
