Pacific Hires Carl Weigley As Assistant Coach

The University of the Pacific swimming and diving program announce the hiring of Carl Weigley as assistant coach. Weigley has spent the last six seasons as an assistant at Fresno Pacific University where he helped lead them to top 10 finishes at the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships.

“I have had the chance to coach and coach with Carl Weigley, and I haven’t met another coach who has more passion about swimming as Carl does,” said head coach Peter Richardson. “He was great swimmer, but anyone who has had the chance to work with Carl knows, he’s a better coach.”

Weigley was part of Fresno Pacific swimming’s first-ever recruiting class, which was led by current Pacific head coach, Peter Richardson. In many ways, Weigley laid the foundation for the program to turn into the top-ten NCAA Division II powerhouse it is today.

“I’ve known Peter for the past ten years and whole heartedly believe in his vision as a coach to help athletes not only become better athletes, but people,” said Weigley. “This is a tremendous opportunity to be a part of something special and I can’t wait to help bring some conference championships back to Stockton. I’d like to thank the family I’ve made at Fresno Pacific the past ten years, without them, none of this would have been possible. I’d also like to give special recognition to Josh Christensen and John McGough who’ve taught me so much about what it means to be a professional in coaching.”

In his four years as a student-athlete Weigley led the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds to two NAIA National Championships (2010, 2011) and won 11 National Championships either in individual events or as part of a relay. He also set eight NAIA National records.

Weigley went on to compete in three events at the 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, NE. In 2016, Weigley placed 12th in the Semi-Finals of the 100 LCM butterfly with a time of 53.20.

A native of Tacoma, Washington, Weigley graduated from Mount Tahoma High School where he won two state championships in swimming. In 2011 he graduated from Fresno Pacific with a degree in Kinesiology and a minor in coaching.
