Texas Men Reel in Verbal Commit from 6A 200 Free Record-Holder Alex Zettle

The University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team keeps charging ahead building its class of 2022. After hearing from Charlie Scheinfeld, Daniel Krueger, and Drew Kibler earlier this spring, the Longhorns have now received a verbal commitment from in-state standout Alex Zettle. He said on Instagram:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Texas to continue my academic and swimming career. It’s an honor to join the longhorn family. Hook’em!”

Zettle is a junior at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas. He is the double-defending Texas 6A champion in the 200 free, and he set the Texas state and 6A record in the event at the UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet this past February with 1:36.27. He won the 200/500 free double as a sophomore, and was runner-up in the 500 as a junior.

Zettle does his year-round swimming with Lakeside Aquatic Club. He won the 100/400/800m freestyles and was runner-up in the 200m free at the Austin Futures last summer, and an A-finalist in the 200/500y freestyles at Winter Juniors. His best SCY times include:

  • 200 free – 1:36.22
  • 500 free – 4:19.73
  • 1000 free – 9:12.47
  • 1650 free – 15:20.36
  • 400 IM – 3:57.83

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected]

Wow. Eddie’s really shaping things up to take back the 800 free relay record in a few years. Nasty freestyle class, nasty in the best possible way. Plus this 18-19 class picks up a breaststroker and Krueger and Kibler are solid sprint backstrokers as well.

So here’s a list of 200 free times Eddie has signed/committed for the 2018 & 2019 classes…some of these times may not be the latest.

1.33.30 Drew Kibler
1.35.23 Parker Neri
1.35.26 Matt Willenbring
1.35.58 Dan Krueger
1.35.58 Sam Pomajevich
1.36.07 Austin Katz
1.36.22 Alex Zettle

I think Eddie has some material to work with for the 800 FR.

Looks to be collecting 100/200/500 swimmers. He had a couple sign this year slower than these times. Will be a great training group but be wary at this point any future signees. Not all will make the Conference Team and NCAA team. You might swim for Texas but will you ever get to represent Texas at a championship.

Insane list of recruits. Kibler and Krueger are 2 of the best American juniors on freestyle. Pomajevich is the best 200 fly American hopeful for the future. Austin Katz has already shown great things on backstroke at the best level in long course. Alex Zettle has a lot of freestyle potential too. I don’t talk about Neri and Willenbring because I don’t know them.

Have missed your analyses, Mr. Wethorn. I also expect increased output from you now that you’ll be able to go to every home meet 🙂

They won’t don’t worry and you know with this class Texas is not letting go of the title on their home turf in 2019.

so the 200 and 500 times are solid. Not sure I would have included the 1000, 1650 and 400IM times in his “best SCY times”. Can’t fault an instate kid for picking UT.

9:12 and 15:20 are pretty solid times and would make him a significant recruit if that’s all he swam. 1650 is almost definitely his third NCAA event at this point.

And I am still shocked that NC State broke UT 800 free relay National Records by more than 1 sec

I’ll have you know, swimgeek, alex is a fine young man and a great swimmer too. He’ll be sure to do great things for the Texas men. I sense an Aggie fan perhaps? Sad!

As a former Texas A & M Swimmer I take great offense to this! Our women’s team BEAT Texas this year! And our Men are a top 20 program!

What makes you say Matthew Willenbring has committed to Texas? I can’t find anything that shows that.
