Jack Conger still unsure of event lineup at Trials (Video)

Reported by Lauren Neidigh.

MEN’S 100 FLY:

  1. Jack Conger– 52.24
  2. Caeleb Dressel– 52.29
  3. Tom Shields– 52.58

As usual, Cal’s Tom Shields had the edge with his front half speed, but coming in hot just a nail behind him was Texas’ Jack Conger. Florida’s Caeleb Dressel lurked just a few tenths behind, and it all came down to who had the most left in the tank on the back half. Dressel was the fastest of the 3 swimmers with his 27.17 closing split, but Conger did just enough to secure the gold, holding him off with a 52.24. Dressel’s 52.29 for silver was just .07 shy of his lifetime best, which stands at a 52.22 from 2016 Trials.

Shields held on for 3rd, touching in 52.58. Also clearing the 53-barrier was Stanford’s Andrew Liang (52.98), who narrowly out-touched Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz (53.03) for 4th.

Hey Jack, don’t make it bad, take a bad swim, and make it better. Remember, to let that motivation into your heart, and then you can start to make it better, and Better and BETTER!!!!! But seriously, do 200 fly, 100 fly, 200 free, and 100 free. No more and no less. Cheers.

While his Trials events do offer a bit of a tough decision, getting rid of that dirty beard is an easy one.

Always wonder why Conger doesn’t do the 200 IM, especially with Phelps retired and Lochte aging. Is his breastroke that weak? Could see him easily under 2:00.

Schooling’s tweet gave us a clue of how nearly unimaginable for Conger doing breaststroke…

As much potential as Dressel has in the 100 fly, seeing him prioritise the event is unlikely due to the schedrule conflict with his best event, the 50 free. I wonder if he will follow what many of the worlds best sprinter do and swim both the 50 fly and 50 free. I could see dressel being grest at the 50 fly

Manaudou in the making, potential line-up for Dressel if not the 100 fly but the 50 fly:

Day1 50fly P 50fly S 4x100free
Day2 50fly F
Day4 100free P 100free S
Day5 100free F
Day6 50free P 50free S
Day7 50free F (possible mixed freestyle relay)
Day8 MR

I would like to see him make the 4X100 free relay team with Adrian, Dressel, Chadwick, Held and Pieroni but . . .
the 100 free and the 200 fly are on day 1 at world trials.
He has to choose. Or he swims a fast time in 100 free prelims to impress the US head coach and scratches the final to focus on 200 fly.
200 free is on day 2.
100 fly is on day 3.

Serious talking, with Dave Durden as head coach and Eddie highly unlikely to be on the team(like last year), I doubt the coaches will be impress enough to make an exception for him.

I bet that 4×100 free relay is in his mind.
Whether he could make it or not is another story though.
