Leah Smith Adds 10 PSS Points, Is Now Top Nationals Earner After Day 3

2017 U.S. NATIONALS/WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TRIALS

Leah Smith is on fire.

While she wasn’t the distance freestyler many expected to make a crossover into IM, it was Smith (not Katie Ledecky) who won the national 400 IM title tonight in a shocker, and it’s Smith, not Ledecky, who leads all Pro Swim Series point-getters at Nationals three days in. (Ledecky elected not to enter the 400 IM this week).

Smith has 22 points, courtesy of her smashing 400 IM win tonight and her pair of runner-up finishes to Ledecky in the 200 and 800 frees. Smith still has the 400 and 1500 freestyles left, though the 1500 doesn’t count for Pro Swim Series points. Ledecky will still contest the 400 free.

Meanwhile on the men’s side, Caeleb Dressel is similarly unstoppable. Where Smith is coming down from distance freestyle to add distance IMs, Dressel is coming up from sprint freestyle and adding sprint butterfly. He won the 100 fly tonight and has now swept the sprint fly races for the week. Dressel has earned 16 points in Indy this week – 10 from his fly win tonight and 6 from his runner-up effort in the 100 free on day 1. In between, Dressel also qualified for a World Champs relay spot in the 4×200 free relay (though he didn’t place top 3 to earn PSS points) and won the 50 fly (which doesn’t give out PSS points).

Chase Kalisz jumped into a tie for second in points at this meet with his win in the 400 IM. He catches 200 free champ Townley HaasAnd Haas’s Texas teammate Jack Conger expanded that to a three-way tie after taking third in the 100 fly.

Meanwhile Kalisz broke a tie with Josh Prenot for the overall series lead. He now leads by 10 over all competitors. Ledecky continues to lead the women’s side.

POINTS & PRIZE MONEY SYSTEM

Each swimmer earns points and prize money for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place finishes in individual Olympic distance events at every stop of the tour. Relays and non-Olympic events (50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, women’s 1500 free, men’s 800 free, etc) do not count for points or money.

  • 1st: $500 and 5 points
  • 2nd: $300 and 3 points
  • 3rd: $100 and 1 point

At Summer Nationals, those point totals will be doubled to 10, 6 and 2.

The overall point winners from the entire series for both men and women will earn $10,000 apiece, as well as a 1-year lease of a BMW car. Athletes of any nationality can earn the cash bonus, but only U.S. citizens can win the BMW. If a foreign athlete or an athlete maintaining their amateurism status wins the tour, the car will be passed on to the next eligible finisher, but if a swimmer maintaining their amateurism status wins the series, the $10,000 bonus will not be passed on to the next finisher.

*Though not addressed in the series rules, a tie appears to net each swimmer the points of the position for which they tied. For example, a tie for first gives both swimmers 5 points, instead of adding up the first and second place points (5+3=8) and splitting them between the two (for 4 apiece). This appears to be reflected in the point standings tallied by USA Swimming on its website.

After 6 events, no US swimmer has earned more than $5,000 in prize money? What is the budget for US Swimming? What are the administrators paid? Is there no one in business development? This is a core Olympic sport for the US. I would like to see the top swimmers able to support themselves while they train.

People don’t pay to see swimmers swim like they do for football, basketball, baseball, and soccer games.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
