Sarah Sjöström was just 56.53 in the 100 fly tonight in Boras on night two of Swedish Nationals. That time is a target most of the best women in the world would be lucky to hit at a major championship; meanwhile, it’s nothing special for Sjöström. The 8-event Swedish record holder and 100 fly world record holder has already been 55.76 this year, which is the world-leading time by a long shot. Her 56.53 is still fastest than anyone else in the world this year, as Japan’s Rikako Ikee‘s 56.89 from January of 2017 remains at the #2 spot in the world rankings.
Finishing 2nd to Sjöström in the 100 fly was rising USC sophomore Louise Hansson in 58.23.

Meanwhile, veteran breaststroker Jennie Johansson broke her own meet record in the 50 breast. Her time of 30.32 just got under her 2014 champs record of 30.39, and she finished ahead of 2nd place Sophie Hansson (31.53) and 3rd place Jessica Eriksson (31.76). Johansson improves upon her season best 30.41, but is still at the #7 spot in the world rankings.

Michelle Coleman, a great 100-200 freestyler who is also strong in backstroke, was the easy winner in the women’s 200 back tonight. She was 2:11.68 to win by a considerable margin over Miranda Arvidsson (2:16.79).
Adam Paulsson had a huge win in the men’s 400 IM. His time of 4:19.71 was the only time under 4:20, and 2nd place was well back at William Lulek‘s 4:25.94. Incoming Virginia Tech freshman Samuel Törnqvist was third in 4:26.92, and nobody else was under 4:30.
In para swimming, Tobias Klasson followed his night 1 100 free win with a 100 back win, scoring 499 points at 1:14.71. Mikael Fredriksson was 1:05.14 in the men’s 50 fly, scoring 627 points.
Other Night 2 Winners
- Three-event Swedish record holder Simon Sjödin took the men’s 100 back, going 55.93 over Petter Fredriksson (56.21).
- Hanna Eriksson swam an 8:54.61 for the women’s 800 free win. Emma Sundstedt was also under 9 minutes at 8:59.89.
- Jesper Björk was 23.99 to win the men’s 50 fly over Christoffer Carlsen‘s 24.06.
- Helsingborgs Simsällskap won the men’s 4×200 free relay in 7:26.53, with a 1:50.68 lead-off from Isak Eliasson.
Well, she’s training for the freestyle races so. The stability should be enough to put her on top in the butterfly but races like this at least says it’s not 110%. She said she felt super heavy though, slim chance of that happening the second day of Worlds.
I’ll be bummed if Sarah does not win four individual golds.
But you never know. In 2014 Euro she was inconceivably beaten by Ottessen in 100 fly.
Budapest would be almost ideal to show off her sprint prowess. She won’t be shackled by swimming individual 200 free and 4×200 prelims and relays, no Cate, Bronte is afflicted by injuries, Oleksiak is on and off, and Manuel, well, I’ve yet to see her swim more than one sub 53.
The only less than certainty would be the 50 free as anything can happen, you miss the start by a fraction and there goes gold or even medal.
Sarah was once already up to such challenge in 2015. She won fly discipline and has beaten Cate Campbell in freestyle. But Campbell Dragon happened to be of two heads. The disappointment of Sarah was so strong that she hasn’t even congratulated the winner. There were no individual 200 free races for that year. So that will be an attempt #2
Ottesen beating Sjostrom in the 100fly in 2014 is probably the most forgotten of Sjostrom’s championship races in the last 6 years. Remember when Michael Rock beat Phelps in the 200fly?
But Rock beats Phelps when he’s in supersuit while Phelps is in textile, in ‘just’ Duel of the Pool (last hurrah of supersuit) at the end of 2009.
While Ottesen beats Sjostrom in 2014 (both of them in textile) at big major meet for them (Euro Champs which is not held in Olympic years).
It’s easier to forget that Phelps’ loss than that Sjostrom’ one. ?
Was Phelps in textile, or was it the 2008 suit? I know MP worse lzr in Rome. People always talk about how Phelps was disadvantaged in 2009 by wearing the lzr suit. Not many people know Gemma Spoffort also wore the lzr for her 100back WR swim.
In 2009 World Champs, Phelps is in LZR (50% polyurethane), but in Duel of the Pool which held after FINA Congress to ban the supersuit effective January 1, 2010, Phelps use textile.

Didn’t Sjostrom mention that she would not be rested for Swedish nats? if so that makes these times insane, and makes wat she could do in Budapest scary!
What she’s done this season so far is insane and scary. How in the world her previous coach hasn’t seen it in her? He got so many credits for coaching her for so many years.
I’m thinking what could MP possibly achieve should he say ” bye-bye ” to Bob Bowman at age 23.
She’s always fast though. I don’t think a taper will make as much of a difference for her as it would for most people. I would expect small drops in Budapest but nothing huge. Small drops should still be enough to take down a few WRs though.
Sweden’s medley – Coleman, Johansson, Hansson, Sjostrom – is looking good.

much faster to switch Hansson and Sjostrom, at least based on their best times (including relay splits), that switch is about 2 seconds faster
i wish sweden male swimmers were half good as their female counterpart..

Louise Hansson looks to be in form, if their 4th swimmer fires, the Swedes may capitalize on their dark horse status in the 4x100free relay.
