Destin Lasco Breaks Another NAG Record in LC

Thanks to MitkoSwim for posting the video to YouTube

Destin Lasco of the Atlantic City Aquatic Club is quickly becoming the king of 9-10 backstroke in this country; adding to his ownership of both of the short course records, he now holds the 50 and 100 backstroke National Age Group Records in long course meters (50m) as well.

Lasco’s mark went down very early in the long course season at a meet this past weekend at the Gloucester Institute of Technology.

In the 100 back, he swam the really impressive time of a 1:09.82, which destroyed by over a second Ryan Murphy’s 1:11.01 from back in 2006. Murphy is now a potential Olympic Trials finalist at only 16, and this time knocks him off of the 9-10 record board – he holds a backstroke NAG Record in every other age group he’s been through.

He would have also broken the National Age Group Record in the 50 backstroke, had it not been taken down just a day earlier by Vincent Marciano. Lasco swam a 32.58 in that race, whereas Marciano had already lowered the record to 32.07.

He still looks very smooth in his backstroke swimming, and even without a super-high turnover he’s clearly heads-and-tails above the rest of his age group. He is certainly tall for his age, but at just over 5 feet tall is not towering over his other competitors.  Destin will have almost a full summer to take these records even lower, as he doesn’t age up until early August.

Great swim, but isn’t he clearly past 15m off the start? I don’t want to hate on a great swim, but to me it looks obvious.

Destin is an AWESOME swimmer and an even nicer kid. Told him if he got that time I would take him to dinner with my kids and I think he was just as excited about hanging out with his friends as breaking a nag record.

video is sort of dark, but it appears close. I did not notice an official at the 15 m mark which makes it a questionable record to me.

I can’t believe no one is talking about Martin Zubero.

A Few Facts

First of all, congratulations to Destin Lasco! Those are impressive records to break. Hopefully he continues to progress and enjoy swimming.
After a bit of research I have found a few facts.
1) Ryan Murphy aged up to 11&12 in early July 2006. At Zones in August, he went 1:08.71. The 1:11.01 that he went was in an aquablade speedo at an in-season meet. Obviously at age 10, there is not much of a difference between in-season vs. championship meets, but I thought I would point this out. Nonetheless, Congrats to Destin!
2) Since Aaron Piersol, only 8 age-group swimmers (18 and under) have broken the 2:00 barrier in the 200 back: Michael Phelps, Eric Ress, Tyler… Read more »

A Few Facts, I’d like to set something straight myself. Sure Ryan Murphy went 1:08 immediately after aging up but Destin has more than enough time to lower his performance under that of an 11 year old if that’s what it takes to please you. The fact that the next face of backstroke has surfaced so quickly is not to be dismissed with an internet comment as condescending as yours. It purely means the sport is getting more refined and utilizing talent more efficiently.

Records are made to be broken. Articles like this should be published on sites like this to celebrate the sport of swimming that we all love. Destin deserves to enjoy his success and accomplishments and he should be proud! ‘A Few Facts’ merely was responding to the first comment written above, which for some unknown reason, changed the focus from Destin. I didn’t read anything derogatory in the comment. It was an obvious response to the “pretender” excerpt. Let’s celebrate all the young swimmers who deserve our praise and encouragement and let’s wish Andrew, Conger, Lasco, Murphy, Pebley and many others a happy & successful future in the sport.
