Hungarian Kristof Milak swam a personal best in the 100 fly prelims this morning in Budapest, lowering the junior world record by 0.01 in 51.23. The 17-year-old erases Li Zhuhao‘s 2016 mark of 51.24 off the books.
Milak exploded earlier in the month at the European Junior Championships, setting the junior world record in the 200 fly in a time of 1:53.79. Despite that performance, Laszlo Cseh and Tamas Kenderesi were already confirmed as the Hungarian entrants in that race, so this marks Milak’s individual debut at the World Championships. His time from that meet would’ve won bronze behind Chad Le Clos and Cseh.
His previous best stood at 51.49, also done at the European Juniors where he won the silver medal.
He qualifies 5th overall for the semi-finals, and will need to be on his game once again tonight in order to advance with plenty of big names trailing him, including Cseh, Le Clos and Mehdy Metella. Caeleb Dressel led the field in 50.08, the 4th fastest swim in history.
Milak will also swim at the World Juniors in Indianapolis next month – a double gold medal contender for sure 🙂
to note, andrei minakov, a 15 year old from russia recorded a 52.06 100 fly at the european youth olympic festival. so, this record may be on watch in the next few months.
Milak is only 17 and may swim twice more here + at the Junior World champs this year and next year at the EC, plenty of time to make this time even better
I predict a great future for this Milak chap!! Just a feeling….aided by his junior record swim!! Hungary have a pearl in their hand!
He might be dressel biggest problem in Tokyo. Might even be the top player there.
