Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine and Jan Micka of the Czech Republic both broke their own national records in the heats of the men’s 1500 free this morning in Budapest, en route to qualifying for tomorrow night’s final.
Romanchuk was swimming in lane three of the final heat, immediately next to defending Olympic gold medalist Gregorio Paltrinieri. Romanchuk stayed close to Paltrinieri for most of the race, then outsplit him over the final few laps to win the heat by two-tenths of a second.
His time of 14:44.11 not only gives him the top seed heading into tonight’s final, but it also knocks over five seconds off the Ukrainian national record. That mark had previously stood at 14:50.33, a time that Romanchuck set at the 2016 European Championships London.
This morning, Micka was swimming in lane seven of the same heat, and he finished in 14:55.57 and punched his ticket for tonight’s final with the fourth-fastest time of the morning. That times lowers the Czech record by just over three seconds. Micka’s previous best, and the national record, was a time of 14:58.62, also from last year’s European Championships.
