You think you are pretty hot stuff, being recruited and all. Your letter of intent has been signed sealed and delivered. And YES, you are smoking fast, but guess what? So are the other freshman recruits!
You are one of the fortunate few who not only start college with a built in family, but you get to represent your school in the highest tradition. It’s your time to shine now in that spanking new team suit and cap, to show everyone what you are made of—-
Part of being a first semester freshman is finding your way….around campus, the library and study halls, around the dorm, the pool and gym, the laundry and training table. OH WAIT? Laundry, you say? If you don’t know how to do it, you have about one month to learn; mom is not there to pick up after you either any more!
You have new responsibilities. Waking up by yourself, getting to class on time, (NEVER missing class, because you will have days you have to miss to compete, doesn’t matter how tired you are), Doing homework without anyone reminding you to get it done; Being accountable to your coaches, your trainers, and your teammates. Eating healthy to support your new intense training routine, and more homework. You will be tired most of the time, but again, so are your teammates.
Sounds like a lot right? The key is organization. Figure out what works for you, how you best excel with the least amount of additional stress. If it takes making a to do list, make it.
This is a major transition, from high school athletics to college. An infinite positive attitude is infectious. It’s not all about you anymore, it’s about team, and the team the works together, plays together and wins. Be a part of that team by pulling your weight, pick up the pieces if need be, without being told, step up to a leadership role.
It’s all good, it’s fun, and you are building memories of a lifetime. Embrace the chance and the change! Go suit up and make some big waves!
