Irina Krivonogova is Only Scratch for Day 1 Finals at World Juniors

The opening day of competition at 6th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis will feature four finals (men’s 400 free, women’s 400 IM, men’s 4×100 free relay, and women’s 4×200 free relay) and four semifinals (women’s 50 breast and 100 back and men’s 100 back and 100 breast). The men’s 400 freestyle qualifiers, headed by USA’s Trey Freeman (3:51.32), and all the qualifying relay teams, led by Brazil (3:18.84) in the men’s 4×100 free and Canada (8:03.10) in the women’s 4×200 free, will also dispute their respective finals.

The only exception to the perfect attendance record in finals will be in the women’s 400 IM, where Irina Krivonogova of the Russian Federation has ceded her spot to South Africa’s Rebecca Meder. Krovonogova qualified 8th with a time of 4:49.21 in this morning heats, while Meder was .22 back with 4:49.43 at 9th.

All 16 qualifiers in each of the semifinals are expected to show up in their assigned lanes tonight. That includes both Nicolò Martinenghi of Italy and Regan Smith of USA, who broke the meet records in the 100 breast and 100 back, respectively, in the morning’s heats.
