MEN: The Delta State men’s swimming and diving team turned in a nearly perfect performance against Rhodes College, winning all but one event against the Lynx and snagging ten 1-2-3 finishes.

OFF THE STARTING BLOCKS:

  • Short Story: The Statesmen won all but one race and notched ten event sweeps against Rhodes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman Giulio Brugnoni continues to impress in his debut season.  After winning the 100-yard backstroke against Alabama in his first race as a Statesmen, Brugnoni snagged three more first-place finishes Friday night.  The Italian native led off the victorious 200 medley relay before winning the 50 free (20.99) and 100 back (49.16).
  • Mattia Schirru cruised to his first victory of the year, dominating the 100-yard freestyle by over two seconds.  The junior All-American also finished second in the 200 free and led off the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay for the Statesmen.
  • In the 200 free, Schirru and junior Gabriel Miranda stayed close through the first half of the race before Miranda edged ahead to secure the win.  Miranda followed with his second individual victory of the meet in the 500 free, finishing in 4:48.44, and was also a member of the Statesmen’s winning 200 free relay.
  • Fresh off his impressive win in the 100 breaststroke against Alabama, Cody Lavoieclocked a 1:55.96 in the 200 individual medley to win by almost six seconds. The senior led a Statesmen sweep of the event, as juniors Adam Charlton and Ivar de Jong finished second and third respectively.  Lavoie also won the 100 breast and swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay.
  • In the 1-meter diving competition, the Statesmen had four divers qualify for NCAAs, as sophomore Kyle Weesner, junior Nick Martin, senior Eli Mcbride, and senior Bill Ashwell all met the Division II qualifying standard.  Weesner swept both 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.

UP NEXT: The Statesmen will have nearly a month off until their next competition, when they travel to Rolla, Missouri, to compete against Missouri S&T, Friday, October 20.  The following day, the squad will take on Lindenwood for their conference opener.

WOMEN: The Delta State women’s swimming and diving team had a dominant showing against Rhodes College, defeating the Lynx 177 to 63.  The Lady Statesmen won all but two events, while recording three 1-2-3 finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Hailey Leonard started the meet off on a high note for the Lady Statesmen, leading a DSU sweep of the 1-meter diving competition and setting a school record with a score of 281.99.  In addition to qualifying for NCAAs in 1-meter, Leonard also won the 3-meter event.
  • In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Caroline Jouisse led from start to finish, recording a time of 5:10.62.  Jouisse also won the 200 free earlier in the meet and anchored Delta State’s victorious 200 medley relay.
  • Following up on her impressive win in the 100-yard backstroke against Alabama during the season-opener, Lucia Martelli clocked a 55.92 in the 100 fly for her second individual event win as a Lady Statesman.  Martelli went out in 25.67 for the first 50 and won by more than six seconds.  The freshman also led off DSU’s winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
  • Junior Celina Batsel cruised to victory in the 100-yard freestyle, with a winning time of 52.99.  Batsel joined Martelli on both winning relays for the Lady Statesmen.
  • Other individual first-place finishers included: Sierra Rhodes (1000 free); Hannah Retherford (50 free); and Chelsea Borrowdale (100 breast).

UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will take nearly a month off from action before hitting the road for their first conference matchup of the season.  Delta State will take on Lindenwood University, as well as William Jewell College, Saturday, October 21.

Rhodes swimming and diving opened their season at Delta State Friday night. The Lynx brought home three top finishes as the men fell 194-43 and the women fell 177-63.

Junior Allie Hill, a two-time SAA Swimmer of the Year won the 200 IM (2:12.17) and 100 backstroke (59.84) for the women while freshman Hayden Hill won the 100 fly (52.82) for the men in his collegiate debut.

Allie made it to the NCAA Championships each of the last two years in the 200 IM as well as the 200 fly last year. She also finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.32.

Mary Beth Baker placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.37.
