Junior Lindsey Staszewski set a school record on the 1-meter dive with 270.45 points as the Loyola University Maryland women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams posted impressive victories over Virginia Military Institute at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatic Center on Wednesday evening.

The women’s team was dominant in its 159-58 win over Keydets; the Greyhounds won 12 of 13 events, including both relays. The men’s team posted a 136.5-85..

In addition to breaking the school record set by Elle Mixa in 2014, Staszewski became an NCAA Zone qualifier, the first since Mixa; Staszewski also took first place in 3-meter diving.

For the women’s team, freshman Emma Schouten was a double-winner as she finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.34) and the 1,650 freestyle (17:37.00).

Sophomore Devin Cronin also earned a pair of individual wins, taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:58.17) and the 100 fly (59.09). Cronin also joined sophomore Emily Koegl, sophomore Annie Hayburn and freshman Emma Dickey on the victorious 200 medley relay team (1:50.10).

Koegl and Dickey also teamed with Gabrielle Clarkson and Ally Pacitti on the 200 freestyle relay team that took first-place with a time of 1:41.41.

Hayburn won the 200 I.M. (2:13.31) while senior Jenna Egan had a good meet, swimming the freestyle events. Egan finished first in the 100 freestyle (55.81) and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.77).

Sophomore Elizabeth Romano excelled in her two events. After finishing third in the 50 freestyle (26.04), she took first-place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.60).

In addition to swimming on the victorious 200 freestyle relay, Pacitti won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:25.70.

While Schouten won the 1650 freestyle, Dickey finished third with a time of 19:26.73.

Senior Katie Ray provided depth in the diving events for the Greyhounds. She was second in both the 1-meter dive (176.55 points) and the 3-meter dive (168.90 points).

In the 100 freestyle, junior Amy Martinelli finished second (56.08). Senior Madalyn Myers turned in a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:58.71) while junior Christina Napoli was second in the 100 fly (1:02.25). Freshman Morgan Hall took second place in the 1650 freestyle (18:33.50).

Senior McKenzie Coan also had a good night, setting a new American record in the S7 1,650 freestyle (20:24.79).

Like the women’s team, the men’s squad opened its meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Mark Boran, senior Ben Cono, sophomore Zac Metzler and freshman Colin Anderson teamed up to win the event with a time of 1:36.78.

Senior Alec Speradino, who was part of the victorious 200 freestyle relay team, won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.25. Freshman Ben Amoreno also finished first in an event, winning the 500 freestyle (4:54.93).

Depth was a key factor for the Loyola men’s team in its win. In the 1,650 freestyle, freshman Josh Gluck and Boran finished third (17:43.47) and fourth (17:53.08) respectively.

In the 200 freestyle, John Kim of VMI finished first (1:48.10) but he was followed by three Greyhounds. Senior Chris Cary took second place (1:48.51) while Cono was third (1:50.17). Metzler contributed a fourth-place finish (1:50.26).

Ryan Schmitz of VMI won the 50 freestyle but senior Phillip Jones of Loyola was second (22.56), and Kolar was third (22.74).

In the 200 I.M., sophomore John Sakovich of the Greyhounds finished second (2:01.37) and teammate Luca Dicapua finished third (2:04.89).

Senior diver Adrian Halarewicz swept both diving events. He won the 1-meter dive with 220.05 points and the 3-meter dive with 212.70 points.

Sophomore Richie Kogut turned in a second-place showing in the 100 butterfly (53.67) while senior Andrew Mann was third (54.00). Sophomore Xander Chan finished fourth (54.03).

In the 100 backstroke, Cono was runner-up (52.75). While Amoreno won the 500 freestyle, John Callaghan placed fourth (5:06.81).

Sophomore Jay Venit finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.74), just ahead of freshman Austin Lee of Loyola (1:01.89).

In the 1,000 freestyle, an exhibition event, freshman Stephen Machak of Loyola turned in a time of 15:41.82.

In the final event of the meet, the Greyhounds’ 200 freestyle relay team finished first with a time of 1:28.39. Anderson, Chan, Speradino and Jones teamed up for the win. Loyola’s B team, made up of Mann, Conor Rutigliano, Kolar and Callaghan, was second (1:30.71).

Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams return to action on Saturday, November 18 when they host Howard University at 1:00 p.m.
