Bob Bowman is happy with the prelims of the 400 IM

Lochte’s 400 trials swim mirrored his WC’s prelim swim. He was a little over a second faster in this prelim which is not surprising as I am sure he has improved. The 400 IM at worlds was also his last individuals event so fatigue was a factor. With that in mind I think he will go a second faster than worlds and clock low 4.06 if he is fully tapered. I think MP will be in the mid 4.06 range. Its gonna an interesting race.
Another thing I see is Lochte “tightening up” towards the end of the race. All of the videos of him working out are much more “sprint” oriented dryland moves. He’s even admitted not to training like a 400IMer, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes it out aggressively, but finds out around the turn at the 50 of the breaststroke leg that he went out too aggressive and it turns out to bit him. Whereas Phelps can pace out the entire 400IM very evently.

Phelps is soo good he is putting a half second over himself in breast leg?
Phelps will have a good meet and make the team in multiple events. But this is Lochte’s year! He will be the story of the games! I see him destroying the field in this final!
Check back at the end of the week Brock and it will be clear that Lochte is still the worlds second best swimmer.

I don’t know about that. Lochte is the favorite in every event as far as the media is concerned and you have to admire his work ethic and dedication. I think with the coverage that NBC will give him that people will be looking at him being the favorite. I just hope he gets a chance to swim on all the relays to bolster that medal count and increase the chances for US gold!

Is it too much to expect 4:05 tonight?
I don’t think so. I think it will be the winning time.
I don’t think so. Not that I am disagreeing much, but 4:05 is a big jump for both guys. It appears more for Phelps, but Lochte doesn’t have a cruise gear whereas Phelps does. Plus even though Lochte is a bit older, Phelps has more experience by taking it a bit easier. Phelps could’ve gone 75% in the prelim and known he’d make finals whereas everyone is going 100% trying to make finals. I’d guess Lochte was moving at 80-85%. 4:06-4:07 takes it tonight.
A 4:05 is probably a bit much for tonight unless they get caught up in the moment. I think both Phelps and Lochte realize this is just a stepping stone to the olympics and they have a long meet ahead of them so they won’t leave everything out there like they will in London. I’m also not confident Lochte could go a 4:05 given the type of strength training he’s been doing I think it’s going to take a toll on him.
I agree. Seems like Clary is the variable. Phelps and Lochte could swim anything under 4:10 and beat everybody, except Tyler. I think if Clary swims anything close to a 4:07 or faster, Phelps and Lochte will have no choice to swim a 4:05 to qualify, and I think Tyler is capable of it.
I always forget (as a non swimmer) that for the coaches it is like WORK time at these things. I know Bob’s thing is he is mister cool but I would be like freaking out.
