Finals At USA Diving Winter Nationals Set Following Day 3 Action

The third day of diving at the 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships solidified finals in both the women’s 3-meter and men’s 10-meter events at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Friday afternoon as both competitions held preliminary and semifinal rounds. Brooke Schultz (Fayetteville, Ark./University of Arkansas) will be the top seed in the women’s 3-meter final on Sunday and Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C./University of Texas) will be the diver to beat heading into the men’s 10-meter final.

Schultz put up the highest mark in the women’s 3-meter preliminary with 305.00 points. She was followed by Hailey Hernandez (Southlake, Texas/GC Divers) who amassed 282.95 points and Carolina Sculti (Rye, N.Y./Marlins Diving Club) with 269.25 points. Schultz scored 62.00 or more points on four of her five dives in the preliminary.

The Arkansas Razorback continued to dominate in the semifinal, finishing the day with a cumulative score of 601.10 to distance herself from the field by 48.45 points. Maria Coburn (Round Rock, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics) jumped from 11th in the preliminary to the number-two spot with a 305.15-point semifinal to bring her overall score to 552.65 points. Hernandez only slipped one spot, coming in third with a total of 540.40 points.

Windle set the pace in the men’s 10-meter preliminary with a mark of 406.25 points. Colin Zeng (Knoxville, Tenn./University of Tennessee) kept the gap close, coming in only 6.20 points behind Windle at 400.05. Zach Cooper (Greenwood, Ind./University of Miami) rounded out the top three with 363.30 points to set the stage for the semifinal. Windle made a strong statement to end the preliminary with a back 2½ somersault 2½ twist pike worth 84.60 points.

The Texas Longhorn lengthened his lead in the semifinal, upping his total score to 852.55 with dives of 86.40 (inward 3½ somersault tuck) and 82.50 (back 3½ somersault tuck) in rounds one and two. Zeng came in at 832.70 points and Max Flory (Fairfax, Va./Dominion Dive Club) hopped Cooper for third with a cumulative score of 702.55. Cooper finished fourth with 698.90 points.

The 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Tuesday, December 19 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Tomorrow’s events include the men’s 3-meter final and women’s 10-meter final. Olympic silver medalist Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass./Indiana University) will be seeded third heading into the men’s 3-meter final. Competition begins at 1:00 p.m. EST.
