While Taylor Ruck and the Canadian youth squad have been making headlines, so too is 17-year-old Rikako Ikee. The Japanese sprinter swam her way to three new national records this week in Lausanne, breaking two marks outright and tying one.
The first was the 50 fly, swum on Day 1 of the meet. Ikee went a 25.06, breaking her own mark of 25.14 which stood as both the Japanese and Asian continental record. In that race, she beat Dutchwoman Ranomi Kromowidjojo, who won the 2017 European title in this very event last week in Copenhagen.
Then, tonight, Ikee posted a 55.64 to win the 100 fly in Lausanne, which ties her own Japanese record. She won the race handily.
The final record came in the 50 free, where Ikee went a 23.95 to take 2nd in Lausanne. That swim makes her the first Japanese woman to go under 24 seconds in the 50 SCM free. Ikee held the old record, a 24.05 done in March of this year. Ikee wasn’t first to the wall, as Kromowidjojo exacted revenge after losing to Ikee in the 50 fly yesterday, going 23.66 to beat the Japanese teen. Taylor Ruck was close behind, too, in 24.08.
