Texas A&M senior diver Tyler Henschel earned a spot on Canada’s 2018 Commonweath Games roster by winning the platform dive at the 2018 Canadian Winter Senior Nationals.

Henschel, a two-time Aggies team captain from Sherwood Park, Alberta, won his second Winter Nationals consecutive title with a score of 458.30, which edged out runner-up Vincent Riendeau by less than two points. The victory punched Henschel’s ticket to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which will be contested April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

“I am very excited and happy to represent both Canada and Texas A&M at the Commonwealth Games,” Henschel said. “What I am most excited about is having the opportunity to compete alongside my teammate (freshman) Kurtis Matthews, who will be competing for Australia. It’s a very small percentage of athletes from the Commonwealth countries that attend schools in the United States and compete at the NCAA level, and to have two divers from the same program is outstanding. It really shows the continued success of our program and hard work (diving coach) Jay Lerew puts in to our team. Jay is the biggest reason for my success and I couldn’t have made the team without him.”

Henschel is the defending Southeastern Conference champion in the three-meter springboard and a five-time All-American in three previous trips to the NCAA Championships. A two-time team MVP, Henschel owns the SEC meet record in the three-meter dive, as well as school records in the three-meter and platform dives.
