Katie Shannahan and Bryce Kananowicz were named to their respective Southeastern Conference Community Service Teams, the conference announced Wednesday. Both individuals recorded the most community service hours for the Gamecock men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams to earn the award.

Shannahan, a junior, volunteered for multiple organizations in the last year. She took part in South Carolina Dance Marathon, helping it raise its highest total to date for the children being treated at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Shannahan also took part in Relay for Life, the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and Pawmetto Lifeline, a not-for-profit animal rescue organization in the Midlands.

Kananowicz has recorded nearly 340 community service hours to earn his spot on the SEC Community Service Team. Like Shannahan, he donated his time to Pawmetto Lifeline and Relay for Life, along with volunteering for Lakeshake, Gamecock Swim Camp and the CRISIS Hotline. One of his greatest community service accomplishments comes from his time working with Blue Ridge Hospice and Crescent Hospice. He spends his time visiting patients and crocheting hand-made blankets for the residents.

Both Gamecocks are recognized for their efforts by the SEC, which sponsors Community Service Teams for all 21 league-sponsored sports.
