Manvell High School junior Jack Armstrong has taken out the first state record of the 2018 Texas High School State Championship weekend in Austin. Swimming in prelims of the boys’ 100 free for class 5A (the state’s smaller schools, though in many cases they’re still quite big), Armstrong qualified through to the 100 free final 1st with a 44.57. That took down the 5A state record of 44.78 set by Austin High’s Grant Reed last year. The overall State Record still belongs to former Churchill swimmer, and two-time U.S. Olympian, Jimmy Feigen.
Armstrong also qualified 1st i n the 50 free (20.31). With no relays to swim this week, he’ll be able to focus on those individual events during Saturday’s finals – with significant margins based on prelims times.
In the girls’ sprints, Nacodogches senior Jesse Stovall qualified 1st through in both the 50 (23.73) and 100 (52.49).
On a rough scoring of the prelims results for the top few teams, the girls’ team race seems to be down to a 2 team battle between Dripping Springs (175 points) and Kingwood Park (154 points). Kingwood Park should see a huge surge of scoring in the middle of the meet, including from 3 scorers in the 100 free, while Dripping Springs picks up its biggest points in the back-half of the meet.
Behind them is about a 10-team battle for 3rd, including Lubbock High (115 seeded points), A&M Consolidated (108), Frisco Wakeland (103), Alamo Heights (102), and Cedar Park (101).
In the boys’ meet, Georgetown High School (183 seeded points) and Dallas-Highland Park (178 poitns) are the clubhouse leaders. Highland Park may be behind early, but don’t count them out – they’ve got 3 swimmers in the A-final of the 100 breaststroke that could get them up to 50 points late in the meet. The next tier of teams includes A&M Consolidated (132 seeded points), Kingwood Park (124 seeded points), and a pair of teams without 200 medley relays, but with outstanding free relays: Austin-Johnson (139 seeded points) and Cedar Park (127 seeded points).
