Ally McHugh Sets B1G Record, Claims First Title for Penn State Since 2014

2018 WOMEN’S B1G TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

It has been almost a quarter-century since a woman from Penn State won a Big Ten title in the 1650.

Regan Stacey was last to do it in 1994, but that streak came to an end in impressive fashion today.

Ally McHugh, a US National Team member and 2017 World University Games Medalist, won the 1650 in 15:43.34, taking down G Ryan‘s 15:44.93 meet record in the process.

With 29-lows, she trailed Michigan’s Bi Yirong until about the 700, then put down consistent 28-lows and mids to pull away substantially from the field.

McHugh’s time ranks second only to Katie Ledecky’s 15:03.31 in the country this year; Yirong’s second-place 15:51.18 ranks third.

Check out her full splits below:

I believe Hannah Moore of NC State went a 15:48 yesterday at ACCs, which would put Yirong in fourth in the NCAA thus far.

Per the photo caption….Penn State vs. Penn. It was Penn State’s..not Penn’s.

“Only second to Katie Ledecky’s 15.03”

Spat out my drink and had to double take. Who leads rankings by 40 seconds!!

Props to McHugh, metronomic swimming.

It is jarring when swim swam uses stock photos featuring strokes that do not relate to the event being reported on.
