Leesburg, Virginia’s Claire Nguyen has announced her verbal commitment to swim for the Arizona State University women’s swimming and diving team in the class of 2023, joining fellow high school junior Riley Lexvold, who also announced her intention to join the Sun Devils in the fall of 2019.
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim for Arizona State University! Thank you to all my friends, family, teammates, and especially Coach John Flanagan and my high school coach, Joel Getis for all of their support over the years. I am so grateful for the opportunity to go to school and swim at Arizona State, and I cannot wait to become a part of such an amazing team. Go Sun Devils!”
Currently a junior at Riverside High School, Nguyen swims for John Flanagan at Nation’s Capital Swim Club, and recently won the 200 free (1:50.46, only .23 off the Class 4 record) and was runner-up in the 500 free (4:51.66) at the VHSL Class 4 Swimming & Diving Championships. She led off the Riverside 400 free relay (52.30) that won the state title, and swim butterfly (25.56) on the third-place medley relay.
While mid-distance freestyle is her strong suit, Nguyen is a versatile swimmer. At 2017 NCSA Summer Swimming Championships she competed individually in the 100/200/400 free, 200 back, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM, and was on two first-place NCAP relays (4x100m free and 4x200m free).
In SCY her top times include:
- 100 free – 51.61
- 200 free – 1:48.46
- 500 free – 4:50.02
- 100 fly – 54.89
- 200 fly – 2:00.61
