1:02 Breaststroker Maya Atkins Sends Verbal to In-state Virginia Tech

Maya Atkins, a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Richmond, Virginia, has elected to remain in-state and has given a verbal commitment to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s class of 2022. Also committed to Virginia Tech for the fall of 2018 are Abby Larson, Alex Slayton, Anna Landon, Brooke Leftwich, Izzi Mroz, Jennifer Hauser, Julia Bruneau, Lauren Meeker, Loulou Vos, Natalia Fryckowska, Rachael Holp, and Teagan Moravek.

“I am excited to start the next chapter of my life as a Hokie! After meeting the coaches and learning more about the swim program, I knew that VT was the place for me. The coaches fully supported me all the way through the recruiting process along with my family, and that was another major deciding factor in my decision. Top notch academics and athletics are what I fell in love with at Tech. So, so thrilled to be a member of the team in the fall! Go Hokies!!”

Atkins is a talented athlete (she achieved black belt in tae kwon do at age 8) who swims for Douglas S. Freeman High School and Nova of Virginia Aquatics and specializes in breaststroke and sprint free. At the recent 2018 VHSL Class 5 State Meet, she was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:02.94) and tied for 3rd in the 100 free (52.00) individually, and contributed leg on the third-place medley relay (28.44 breast) and second-place 200 free relay (23.92 leadoff).

Atkins took a huge chunk out of her PB in the 100 breast this past weekend, going 1:02.33 to finish second at the 2018 Virginia Swimming SC Senior Championship. She was also a finalist in the 200 breast, 50 free, and 200 free.

Top SCY times:

  • 100 breast – 1:02.33
  • 200 breast – 2:16.62
  • 100 free – 51.89
  • 50 free – 23.68
