The Stanford team of Janet Hu, Simone Manuel, Lauren Pitzer, and Ally Howe set an American record in prelims of the women’s 200 free relay this morning, and rebroke it, along with the NCAA record, in finals Thursday night.
Cal’s NCAA record from 2017 stood at 1:25.59 — the 2018 Stanford team split 21.65/20.89/21.62/21.27 to en route to their new record of 1:25.43.
With a lead going into the final 50, Ally Howe held off Cal anchor Abbey Weitzeil — who spit 9.94/11.07 (21.01) — with a huge underwater off her second wall. Howe split 10.23/11.04, out-touching Weitzeil by .07.

I am pretty sure Megan Romano split a 20.8 at NCAAs one year. Can someone please check and if so give that girl some well deserved credit.
I just asked her, she says her best is a 20.9 (we didn’t find any 20.8s when we looked either).
That’s quick service.
Jennifer: “Pretty sure Megan Romano split a 20.8.”
Braden: “Hold on, she’s right here, let me ask her… Close, she said 20.9.”
Jennifer: “Awesome, thanks.”
Both Stanford and Cal under the previous record time. That’s a crazy fast heat.
