For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims at the NCAA National Championships, swimmers and divers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, and places 9 through 16, the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time, or score the most diving points, of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Down” to swimmers in the B final.
Denison had another great morning, highlighted by 4 A-finalists in the men’s 400 IM. The Big Red earned 31 more points than expected out of prelims on Day 2, and further distanced itself from the rest of the field atop the team standings. Kenyon, which had a lock on the #2 position, had a difficult morning, failing to advance any of its 200 freestylers into the A final, although they did send 4 to the B final. Emory, up 17 points on the morning, is in a strong position to take over for Kenyon at number 2 in the final standings. Williams, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, and Rowan, and NYU all had better-than-expected performances in prelims, but no one shocked as much as Occidental, whose senior Austin Lashley unleashed a 47.88 to move from 15th seed to first qualifier in the men’s 100 fly.
