2018 Men’s NCAA Championships: Day 3 Up/Downs And Prelim Scores

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

***UPDATE The Tables below have been updated to include diving prelims. The article text is only up to date though the relay***

Cal led the way this morning with 6 individuals qualifying for tonight’s A final and 4 individuals in B finals. Texas were next with 5 up and 2 down individually followed by Indiana with 5 up 1 down, USC with 4 up 1 down, NC State with 3 up 2 down, and Florida with 3 up 1 down. All five contenders put their 200 medley relay in the final.

The projected scores after tonight (before diving has concluded) remain extremely tight between the top 3 with 2 more teams still in striking distance. With prelims points plus the real score after yesterday Cal lead with 281.5, Indiana are 2nd with 280, followed by Texas with 274.5, NC State with 243.5, and Florida with 239.

The biggest gainers vs the scored psych sheet were USC who picked up 55 points, Cal who added 39, Stanford who added 37.5, and Texas who added 36.5. The biggest drop off came from Grand Canyon who dropped 18 points. Minnesota, Ohio St, and Texas A&M each dropped 17 points.

The highest projected score in any individual event is Cal in the 100 fly with 39, followed by USC in the 100 back with 35, Florida with 34 in the 100 fly, Indiana with 32 in the 100 breast, and Georgia with 31 in the 400 IM.

The below does not include diving as it has not concluded yet. Prelims scores are subject to change tonight, but they give us a good idea of where things stand headed into the night session.

Hmmm IU w 3 in Diving A final! Looking like ole StankieGurlie knows how to call it. IU WILL WIN MEET BY 10-15 points.

IU just put 3 diver in the A final, which makes 8 up, 1 down, and an A relay. Texas put two in the A as well, boosting its total ups to 7.

Only one non-scoring entry for Indiana on the day – and that was 17th place by .02. They are being very economical with their swims (Khallafalla could have swam 100 back and Blaskovic and Fantoni 100 fly but neither was a scoring threat), and it might just pay off for them.

On the tactics topic, the Molacek 5-relay plan is interesting but possibly necessary with the Ress injury – I wonder if they would have gone that direction had Ress been healthy.

Fantoni back was lackluster but they may compensante on relays

I looked at the psych sheet for tomorrow and I have this meet about dead even for Texas, Indiana and Cal. Could easily come down to the final relay.

There’s 1.5 rounds of diving to go, but it looks like Indiana will go 2/1 and Texas 2/0.

Halfway through 3M prelims, Indiana sits 1-2 & 14, while Texas is 3-4. None of the other top teams have anyone in scoring position. Se ya’ll tonight…

Indiana could go 3 up… going to come down to the last dive between IU’s Connor and USC’s Enos.

And Enos bombed his last dive… so final up/downs for the day Indiana 8/1, Texas 7/2, Cal 6/4, USC 4/2, NCSt 3/2, Florida 3/1.

Through 3 rounds IND has top 2 spots and 1 down. TX on pace for 2 up also

I don’t see Indiana losing this once you factor in diving, but it’s going to be close!

honestly it’s hard to see them beating Texas at this point but there have been a lot of swings! With no diving points, Florida is toast (as far as winning the meet) and I’d be pretty nervous if I were a Cal fan… they’ve been swimming well and yet barely even, with diving still to come.

Based on current points, predicted points for tonight, and predicted points from the heat sheet tomorrow, Indiana would win by 2.5 points over Texas without diving. Indiana has one additional A final diver tonight compared to Texas. I assume Texas will beat some of it’s seeds tomorrow, but it’s going to be incredibly close.

Swimswam how does it feel hyping up ASU so hard and having them underperform?

ASU is clearly still a work in progress. Once the likes of Bybee and Henry get there next year I imagine they’ll be significantly improved.
