Olympic gold medalist Breeja Larson was among the swimmers earning top seeds out of prelims on day 2 of the Four Corners Speedo Sectionals in Phoenix, with her competing in the 200 freestyle. Primarily a breaststroker, Larson, representing the New York Athletic Club, posted the top time of the morning in 1:49.99. Her best time in the event is a 1:49.19 from this meet last year.
The 25-year-old Larson won Olympic gold in London as a member of the American 400 medley relay (prelim squad), earning a World Championship title the next year in the same event. She was also the bronze medalist individually in the 100 breaststroke at the 2014 Pan Pacs.
Katie McBratney of Pitchfork Aquatics heads into tonight’s final in 2nd with a clocking of 1:50.56, and Haley Benjamin from the Durango Swim Club sits 3rd in 1:50.75.
The biggest highlight on the men’s side came from 17-year-old Jarod Arroyo, who dropped a personal best 3:51.52 in the 400 IM prelims. His previous best, done earlier this month at the Arizona Short Course Senior Open Championships, was 3:54.05. Arroyo also swims for Pitchfork Aquatics. Benjamin Miller (4:01.37) of the Tigard Tualatin Swim Club sits 2nd.
OTHER EVENTS
- Grant Gamroth (swimming unattached) took the top spot in the men’s 200 free prelims in 1:39.86, followed by Pitchfork’s Thomaz Martins (1:40.62) and Mesa’s Christopher Allen (1:41.00).
- In timed finals of the 200 free relay, Martins had the fastest lead-off in the field at 20.69. However, Pitchfork (1:25.84) ultimately took 4th as Lake Country won in 1:24.62. Lucas Farrar had the top split for them in 20.10.
- Durango’s Benjamin followed up her 3rd seed in the 200 free with the top spot in the women’s 400 IM, clocking 4:18.26. Mia Rankin of the Phoenix Swim Club holds down 2nd in 4:20.37.
- Scottsdale ‘A’ and ‘B’ went 1-2 in the women’s 200 free relay, with their top team winning in 1:34.89. The relay swimmers weren’t posted for either team.g
