Friday night at the 2018 Men’s NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota set the stage for one final NCAA 100 fly showdown between Florida’s Caeleb Dressel and Texas’ Joseph Schooling. The race once again went to Dressel. He made history as the first man to break 43, clocking in at 42.80 to dominate the race. The Gators went 1-2 with Jan Switkowski taking 2nd in 44.49. That makes Switkowski the 6th fastest man ever. Indiana’s Vini Lanza moved to #7 all-time with his 44.50 for 3rd. Texas’ Schooling was 4th in 44.88.
Splits:
- 1st 50 Split- 19.99
- 2nd 50 Split- 22.81
- Final Time- 42.80
The former NCAA Record stood at a 43.58 from last season’s NCAA meet, where Dressel upset schooling for the title after Schooling had won the previous 2 years. They’re still the fastest 2 swimmers in history.

See! Non-Americans DO swim Short Course!
100 fly champions
2015, 2016 : Schooling
2017, 2018 : Dressel
Both are from bolles.
As I predicted, your boy was tasting Dressel’s feet. His 200 fly tomorrow is going to be painful to watch.
As I said to you a week or two ago, Dressel is miles ahead of Schooling at this point, no surprise to me that it wasn’t the least close. And this is coming from a Schooling fan. The numbers leading up this race were very telling. I wish I had been wrong, but alas! Don’t let your rabid fandom get in the way of good old logic!
I’m going to miss Caeleb at Ncaas. The future is blindingly bright but man it’s just fun to watch.
Must be the mizuno
After millions of years of evolution, my senses still are having a hard time of processing this swim. Thank science we have verifiable times to confirm what our eyes are disbelieving!
Will there ever be another swimmer doing 17,6, 42.8 and 39.x?
Yes probably. Dressel broke the barrier and I’m not surprised if we see a couple/a lot of swimmers do this times in 10 years. Dressel will forever be the sprint and yards GOAT though.
there is nobody on this earth that is going 17 for the next 10 years
That’s what people said when Morozov broke the record a few years ago
thats not true at all. when vlad set that time, Caeleb was already turning heads
Just as Hoffer did a few years ago when Dressel won his first NCAA title. Hoffer will probably not be as fast as Dressel as a SR but someone will
Don’t misunderstand me, Dressel is my biggest idol and inspiration but he broke the mental barrier and it will now be easier to swim sub-18
You could also argue he broke the mental barrier of a sub 18.4 three years ago and yet here we are and he’s 17.6 and no one else is sub 18.4
@PVDH challenge accepted
How did Schooling do so poorly compared to last year, when he kissed half the 2016-2017 season?
How much if this season did he do?
Lack of motivation?
1. he didnt miss all that time, the was simply an attempt at mind games
2. Caeleb has broken his will at this point
By getting gold, getting rich, and… well, that’s it. NCAA’s is an afterthought.
He’s Missy’d.
Except that Missy was working her butt off the whole time. Don’t think that’s been the case for Schooling since Rio.
So what would he have done in 200IM?
i don’t dare imagine.
