While the incredibly tight race the men’s NCAAs is taking up most of our attention, there’s plenty of swimming happening across the country, including some other big swims.
This morning at the Akron Sectionals, Riptide’s Regan Smith set a new 15-16 National Age Group record in the 100 back. Smith dropped 0.02 seconds off her seed time this morning, splitting in 25.07/26.21 for a 51.28. Her previous best of 51.30 came at the 2017 USA Swimming College Challenge, where she split a virtually the same 25.07/26.23.
That swim is still a bit off of Smith’s best time, however, which stands at 51.09, a time she set while still a 14 year-old. Smith dropped nearly two seconds from prelims to finals Thursday en route to setting the 200 Back National Age Group Record, so it seems likely that she should have a good drop in the 100 back this evening, and set a new personal best. It’s quite conceivable should could even get under the 17-18 NAG, which stands at 50.50 and held by current Cal swimmer Amy Bilquist.
Smith’s only other event this morning was the 200 free relay, where she lead off in a new personal best time of 23.14, leading Riptide to a 1st place finish in the timed finals relay.
She also swam the 200 Fly in prelims. An easy looking 1:54.85. If she drops 1.9 seconds tonight she gets the Mary T Meagher 37 year old record (1:52.99)! Based on her 200 back speed and finals cut on Thursday, it’s better than 50/50 she gets it.
If that record goes down…this will officially be the craziest yards weekend ever.
Pretty sure you won’t get many arguing with you on that one..
Honestly….Masse/Baker/Seebohm better watch tf out this summer. Regan Smith has the potential to surpass them all very quickly.

David Plummer? Tom Malchow? Trina Radke? Kris Humphries? Rachel Bootsma? Heard of them?
I am well aware of all of them. Trina Radke especially. But neither of the people you mentioned had the talent that Regan has. And most of them retired long ago or quit early. They’re all great and noteworthy of course, but I meant someone who can lead the face of swimming level.
Unreal!! She will be huge in college swimming any school will be lucky to have her versatility
As long as she’s not a Gator. I can’t get excited about Dressel for that reason. Haven’t watched all week.
