Vazaios Lands #7 All-Time with 1:39.6 200 Fly

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

NC State’s Andreas Vazaios was the fastest man through prelims of the 200 fly. Vazaios broke 1:40 for the first time this morning, clocking in at 1:39.68. That took a full second off his former best 1:40.77 from last season’s NCAA meet. Vazaios’ performance moves him up to #7 on the all-time top performers list, just 3 hundredths behind U.S. Olympic butterfliers Tom Shields and Michael Phelps, who are tied for 5th all-time.

Vazaios’ Splits:

  • 1st 50 Split- 22.77
  • 2nd 50 Split- 25.50
  • 3rd 50 Split- 25.50
  • 4th 50 Split- 25.91
  • Final Time- 1:39.68

Switkowski’s Splits:

  • 1st 50 Split- 22.31
  • 2nd 50 Split- 25.58
  • 3rd 50 Split- 26.01
  • 4th 50 Split- 26.53
  • Final Time- 1:40.13

Florida’s Jan Switkowski, the 200 IM champ, had moved up to #10 all-time in this event after winning his heat, but got bumped to #11 when Vazaios won his heat. That took nearly a second off his best, as it stood at a 1:40.94 from the 2017 SEC Championships.

Vazaios is on fire. 1:39 200 IM, a bunch of outstanding relay splits and now this? I see him and Switkowski battling it out again unless Quah has more in the tank.
Also, I’m not even a huge Schooling fan but you’ve still gotta feel for the guy. He just looks like he’s got no confidence anymore, you can see it in the way he swims. Even last year he swam “big,” but at this meet he swims scared. I don’t think it’s a missed taper or not working hard, I think it’s all mental. Hope we can see some of that cockiness again.

Oh, you right. He’s definitely a huge factor. Quah could easily end up outside of top 3.
