Regan Smith Breaks Own NAG, Drops 1:53 200 Fly at Akron Sectionals – Day 3

The third day of the 2018 Central Zone Championships in Akron, Ohio, featured finals for the women’s and men’s 100 back, 500 free, 100 breast, and 200 fly, and the men’s 800 free relay.

Riptide’s 16-year-old Regan Smith kicked off the day with a 50.84 100 back (24.72/26.12), breaking her own 15-16 national age group record, set in prelims this morning. Michigan Lakeshore’s Kathryn Ackerman was second in 54.71, followed by Lake Erie’s Portia Brown in 55.04. PEAQ’s Jack Fitzpatrick won the men’s race in 48.81 (23.71/25.10), followed by Mercy Healthplex’s Gregory Kalin in 39.33, and Michigan Lakeshore’s Ian Miskelley in 49.44.

Lucia Rizzo, of Riptide, split 56.09/59.93/1:00.36/1:00.58/58.14 to win the women’s 500 in 4:55.10. Utica Shelby’s Emma Bliss took second in 4:56.09, followed by Caroline Sisson in 4:56.62. Michigan Lakeshore’s Skyler Cook-Weeks split 50.23/53.88/54.63/55.43/53.40 to top the men’s race in 4:27.57. Utica Shelby’s Daniel Frederick was second in 4:31.08, and Hudson’s Jay Johnson was third in 4:33.69.

Racer X’s Zoe Skirboll took the women’s 100 breast in 1:01.47 (28.64/32.83). Irish Aquatics’ Aislinn Walsh took second in 1:01.79, followed by Laura Goettler in 1:02.37. 20-year-old Devon Nowicki won the men’s race in 53.59 (24.73/28.86), followed by Lake Erie’s Fausto Huenta in 55.57. West Ottowa’s Derek Maas took third in 56.20.

Regan Smith blasted a 1:53.50 200 fly to win the event by over 7 seconds, splitting 25.12/28.93/29.38/30.07. Michigan Lakeshore’s Kathryn Ackerman was second in 2:00.77, just ahead of DROP’s Madeline Greaves in 2:00.82. Greenfield’s Zachary Cook won the men’s race in 1:49.12 (24.08/28.21/28.62/28.21). Seneca Valley’s Owen Blazer, 16, took second in 1:51.50. Racer X’s Kimani Gregory was third in 1:51.55.

Michigan Lakeshore’s A relay team of Skyler Cook-Weeks, Ian Miskelley, Kyle Maas, and Cameron Peel won the 800 free relay by nearly 15 seconds, splitting 1:38.00/1:42.79/1:39.60/1:39.54. Their C team was second in 6:53.90, and Southwest Michigan’s A team was third in 6:54.63.
