Kaitlynn Sims of Montgomery, Texas has given a verbal commitment to the University of Michigan for the 2019-20 school year. She swims for Montgomery High School and Magnolia Aquatic Club and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and a NISCA All-American. Sims made her announcement via social media:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Michigan! Go Blue! ?〽️”
Sims is one of the top distance freestylers in the high school class of 2019. She won both the 500 free (4:42.38) and 1650 free (16:10.94) and was ninth in the 400 IM (4:16.40) at 2017 Winter Juniors West in December. She was also on the MAC 800 free relay that broke the meet record, and on the second-place 400 free relay. Sims attended National Select Camp in October; she was selected for her performance in the 1500 free last summer.
Sims recently wrapped up her junior season of high school swimming at the UIL Texas 6A State Championships, where she won the 500 free (4:44.51) and was fourth in the 200 IM (2:01.96). She also won the 500 last year and was runner-up as a freshman. Sims kicked off long course season this spring with new PBs in the 1500 free (16:42.98), 400 free (4:15.06), 200 free (2:02.65), and 400 IM (4:53.80) at the TYR Pro Swim Series-Atlanta.
Sims’ best 1650 time would have been 24th-fastest at NCAAs this year, while her 500 would have been 34th. At B1G Conference Championships, she would have scored for the Wolverines in the 1650 (8th), 500 free (B final), and 400 IM (B final).
