2018 Commonwealth Games: Day 6 Prelims Live Recap

2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The final day of swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games is upon us, featuring preliminaries of the women’s 400 free, men’s S9 100 back, women’s S8 50 free, men’s 200 IM, and men’s 4×100 medley relay.

WOMEN’S 400 FREE PRELIMS

  • CG record: Lauren Boyle, 4:04.47 (2014)
  1. Ariarne Titmus, 4:10.22
  2. Eleanor Faulkner, 4:11.19
  3. Holly Hibbott, 4:11.65
  4. Mikkayla Sheridan, 4:11.69
  5. Camilla Hattersley, 4:12.26
  6. Joanna Evans, 4:12.38
  7. Jessica Ashwood, 4:13.12
  8. Carina Doyle, 4:13.33

Well off of her season best, Aussie Ariarne Titmus took things at a cruise this morning, still finishing almost a full second ahead of the next-best competitor in the 400 free prelims. The 17-year-old posted a 4:10.22, though her season best from March is a 4:02.36.

England’s Eleanor Faulkner (4:11.19) and Holly Hibbott (4:11.65) were next this morning, with another Aussie, Mikkayla Sheridan, fourth in 4:11.69.

MEN’S S9 100 BACK PRELIMS

  1. Timothy Hodge, 1:05.03
  2. Logan Powell, 1:05.28
  3. Brenden Hall, 1:06.10
  4. Jesse Reynolds, 1:06.46
  5. Lewis White, 1:07.38
  6. Jacob Leach, 1:07.81
  7. Chris Arbuthnott, 1:08.72
  8. Barry McClements, 1:08.81

It was an Australian sweep this morning in the S9 100 back, with Timothy Hodge edging Logan Powell by just a quarter of a second. Hodge was first in 1:05.03, just ahead of Powell (1:05.28), while a third Aussie, Brenden Hall, was third in 1:06.10.

WOMEN’S S8 50 FREE PRELIMS

  2. Morgan Bird, 32.27
  3. Abigail Tripp, 32.54
  4. Tiffany Thomas Kane, 35.21
  5. Carmen Lim, 35.95
  6. Vaishnavi Vinod Jagtap, 41.63
  7. Ann Wacuka, 56.63

Lakeisha Patterson of Australia was first to the wall in the women’s S8 50 free, touching at 31.41.

The race for 2nd was incredibly tight between two Canadians, as Morgan Bird edged her teammate Abigail Tripp, 32.27 to 32.54.

MEN’S 200 IM PRELIMS

  1. Mitch Larkin, 1:59.02
  2. Clyde Lewis, 1:59.50
  3. Dan Wallace, 2:00.21
  4. Duncan Scott, 2:00.44
  5. Bradley Ashby, 2:00.57
  6. Mark Szaranek, 2:00.58
  7. Xavier Castelli, 2:00.97
  8. Lewis Clareburt, 2:01.33

In the third and final heat of the prelims this morning, Mitch Larkin of Australia powered back in the free leg to pass up his teammate Clyde Lewis in the last fifty meters of the race. Larkin and Lewis were the only finishers under two minutes, with Larkin at 1:59.02 and Lewis at 1:59.50.

Dan Wallace was one of three Scottish IMers to qualify through to tonight’s final with his 2:00.21, as Duncan Scott (2:00.44) and Mark Szaranek (2:00.58) both making the final, too.

MEN’S 4X100 MEDLEY RELAY PRELIMS

  • CG record: England, 3:31.51 (2014)
  1. Australia, 3:33.61
  2. England, 3:36.68
  3. Scotland, 3:38.79
  4. Canada, 3:40.79
  5. South Africa, 3:42.44
  6. Northern Ireland, 3:42.99
  7. Mozambique, 3:55.91
  8. Mauritius, 4:04.51

Australia was easily through to the finals tonight with a 3:33.61, over three seconds ahead of England’s 3:36.68.

Also under the 3:40 mark was Scotland (3:38.79), with Canada in fourth (3:40.79) and South Africa in fifth (3:42.44).

Bronte’s swimming the relay. From what the Aussie coaching staff said it looks like the decision was made even before the final last night (so I could see Simon’s mindset being Cate has had the extra load of the fly so she’ll get a reprieve and let Bronte go in thinking it was her final race last night so she could swim like there was no tomorrow before she goes into rehab mode, which she normally would do anyway, except for the good ol’ surprise you’re swimming tonight).

If one watched 400free prelim hits then this person gets an idea how
World record of Debbie Mayer looked like (winner heat1)
World Record of Shirley Babashoff looked like (heat 2)
World record of East Germans looked like (heat 3)
What is the absurd idea to compare achievements of contemporary swimmers with the ones of those who made it 50 or 40 years ago.
