Full entries are not complete for the upcoming Atlanta Swim Classic, which will take place next weekend in parallel with the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis.
Meet organizers have provided SwimSwam with a psych sheet through Thursday’s entries, though they’ve been clear that they are expecting more entries before Sunday night’s deadline for official changes.
Previously announced for the meet were U.S. Olympians Ryan Lochte and Caeleb Dressel, both of whom train (now as professionals) at the University of Florida.
Dressel, who is swimming under the flag of the Bolles School Sharks club team that he represented as a high school swimmer, has 6 entries for the meet: the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 200 IM.
The 50 free and 100 free are a part of his typical international long course schedule. He’s not entered in the 100 fly, where he’s the defending World Champion, however. Instead, he’s picked up the 100 breaststroke (where in yards he broke the NCAA Record at SECs, before Ian Finnerty broke it at NCAAs); the 200 IM (where he did the same); and the 200 free, that he swam at last year’s Summer Nationals in 1:47 (but is seeded with a 1:55.00 that he’s never actually swum).
The 33-year old Lochte is swimming a much thinner schedule. He’s entered in the 200 free, 400 IM, and 100 fly at the meet.
Among the new names entered include Olympic breaststroker Molly Hannis, who trains with the post-grad group at Tennessee. She’s entered in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 free, but no 200 breaststroke (where she represented the U.S. at the 2016 Olympic Games).
Canadian 17-year old Penny Oleksiak will also be at the meet, representing the Gator Swim Club (she trains in Canada at the Toronto Swim Club). She hasn’t raced since winning a trio of silver medals in relay at the Commonwealth Games in Australia last month. The Olympic 100 free champion is entered in 5 races: the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 fly. That 200 fly isn’t a race she swims often – in fact, according to the Canadian times database, she hasn’t raced it since February 2016.
Other Noteworthy Names:
- U.S. National Teamer Meaghan Raab – 200 free, 100 breast
- South Carolina junior Fynn Minuth, the 2017 SEC Champion in the 500 free, who is likely swimming for a spot on Germany’s team for the European Championships.
- Canadian National Teamer Javier Acevedo
- Former Italian Olympian, now competing for the U.S., Mitch D’Arrigo, along with several other Gator Swim Club teammates, like double Commonwealth Games medalist Mark Szaranek
- Florida commit Vanessa Pearl, the 6th-ranked recruit in the high school class of 2018.
- U.S. National Teamer Michael Andrew – 100 breast, 100 fly, 50 free, 100 free
And of course once again no live stream for that meet? It’s so hard to put a camera there?
Right ?
Old School
Has Dressel announced which suit company he’s signing with yet?
Presumably if he’s wearing anything other than THE Mizuno in Atlanta we’ll get a pretty big clue.
Would be smart to sign with Mizuno AND a large sports apparel company such as Nike, UA etc.
Whatever suit it is, it will henceforth be believed to be the fastest suit.
And little chocolate donuts which have just the right amount of sugar to get him going as he trains to go to the Olympics for the USA.
The 200 fly could be a really good event for Penny, and it’s a lot more wide open than the 100 fly or the 100/200 free. I’m glad to see her dipping her toes in it.
She’s shown potential in it before. I think she still holds at least one Canadian Youth record of some kind in it, and she won it in her first ever international competition (Australian Age Group Championships in 2015) by more than half a second.
it’s been off her schedule for over two years… about time she resurrects it!

Curious to see which event dressel adds this year. 200 IM > 100 breast imo
Agreed. I’m not yet a believer in long course 100 breaststroke for Dressel and that event is pretty crowded at the top in the US. There’s a pretty big gap behind Kalisz, with the only apparent competition being DeVine and Lochte. The 200IM definitely seems like the more realistic event for him.
Despite not being sure if he has it in the 100 breast, though, I would not at all be surprised if Dressel tries for (and wins) the 50 breast spot at World Trials. Considering the difference between Peaty and Dressel off the block, it’s not unreasonable to think Dressel might have a bodylength lead or so at the breakout… I’m not saying that will be enough to hold… Read more »
I would put Prenot in the mix for the 200IM.
Penny no longer trains in Toronto
Did she switch clubs again? Because last I heard, she switched from the High Performance Center to the Toronto Swim Club last year.
she still trains in Toronto…..w/ Toronto Swim Club
Jingle is correct. She is currently testing out Gator Swim Club with Greg Troy
Indy psych sheets are on usa swimming page. Lots of biggest names are there
No Georgia pros? They must be going to Indy?
As I said, not all entries are in. We’re hearing some unceratinty on whether Missy will be there.
I bet michael andrew gets over-excited after he beats dressel when dressel is going through some tough training.
People downvote, but he actually has an interview where he says he’s “trying to beat Phelps” at some random Grand Prix.
Unbelievable. I can’t believe someone tried to beat Phelps. Simply astounding.
I, too, love ignoring context
I remember that meet. Andrew and Phelps we’re both in the 50 freestyle. Phelps swam butterfly and Andrew swam free but Phelps still wound up beating andrew
God forbid a kid thinks its cool to have a shot to beat a swimmer he grew up admiring. Even worse is the idea of a young person setting goals for themselves and actually giving those goals publicly.
