200 Breast Champ Daniel Roy Trains By Himself (Video)

Reported by James Sutherland.

MEN’S 200 BREAST FINAL

  1. Daniel Roy, UN, 2:09.73
  2. Chase Kalisz, ABSC, 2:09.90
  3. Nic Fink, ABSC, 2:11.33

Daniel Roy (going to Stanford this fall) and Chase Kalisz had an epic duel in the men’s 200 breast final, with Kalisz maintaining a slight edge heading into the last 50. While Kalisz is known for strong closing speed, it was Roy who charged back in 33.54 to overtake the double medley world champion and book the win in 2:09.73. Roy’s swim lowers his own 17-18 National Age Group Record, which previously stood at 2:10.77.

Kalisz was a little less than two tenths back in 2:09.90, while his Athens teammate Nic Fink was 3rd in 2:11.33. Kevin Cordes (2:13.19) and Cody Miller (2:13.20) were just a hundredth apart for 4th and 5th, while Marat Amaltdinov (2:14.42) got by Reece Whitley (2:14.85) for 6th.

He really took off the summer of 2016. I definitely was surprised when he semifinaled at trials. At that time, I think he was still swimming with a Spokane Y team with Kalen Darling coaching him (who had coached him for years before). Too bad Kalen isnt still in the area cause they seemed to work well together and Daniel transitioned into the big leagues during that time. Congrats to Daniel! Awesome swimming!

Sounds like it could be worse though… Emma Schanz (from Corville, WA) had to swim at a hotel pool for most of the year because of the lack of any indoor pools in the area.

He swam for Spokane Area Swimming team until 2016 OT. I think his coach was a pro triathlete and went back to his profession. Probably this team and one more in the area but is kind of far in Idaho side. Lots of coach changes in the area and same for across the country. No high school swimming in eastern Washington on top of it.

Sounds like Doug Djang is still his coach.

Is Doug coaching in Spokane now? Regardless, since summer of 2016, Daniel has reached the point in swimming where I’m sure Usaswimming provides him with a lot of resources, which probably helps some. I bet he is excited for Stanford though, where he will be part of a team that trains together. Not to mention, amazing facilities!

There is no 50 meter pool there I think. If there is, it would be a pool in a park, which means they have to wait until June when their pool opens.

Witter and Comstock pools both are 50m open May through September I believe.

I think their summer solstice is the season opener for LCM in June.
