12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte has been back with his former University of Florida head coach, Gregg Troy, and it’s showing. Lochte’s doing honest work, 8000-9000 meter practices, and he dropped solid swims at the Mel Zajac in Canada:
- 4:15 – 400 IM
- 1:58 – 200 IM
Lochte admits he was a little scared of getting back into it with Troy, but Troy set a two-year plan, and it appears to be working. At age 33, married with a son, and enduring Troy-training, Lochte joked he doesn’t sleep, but the quieter Gainesville family lifestyle may be exactly what he needed. Lochte’s clearly in a good place. The only question is what will it take at U.S. Nationals in Irvine to make a Team USA squad?
I think 4:10.0 makes it in the 400 IM and 1:56.0 makes it in the 200 IM. Lochte should be there by July 25th. What do you think? Does Lochte make Pan Pacs with those times? Can he swim that fast with a shave, or faster?

Brasilian court set now barrier 3weeks before US natsionals.. This is ridicoulus country. Iightly criminal incident occured alerady 2years ago. Human rights violent. Case are too long already. Please, Ryan keep strong and keep focus training and recovering.. Fan From Estonia. Link. Jurists reguest media. Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/sports/olympics/ryan-lochte.html
This is true info. Ridicoulous but true. I hope Ryan is strong–
At this point we all know dressel can go at least 1:45.9 in the 200 free tapered. And since Lochte has been faster than dressel this season non-tapered in the 200 free I would arguably think lochte can bust a 1:45 low 1:44 high tapered. That combined with the fact Lochte went 1:45.3 at age 31 under Marsh training it doesn’t seem that far fetched.
US nationals timetable is realased now. Second day 200m free and 200back. Third day 400IM and two day later 200IM.
Please not put dislikes. My english is very bad. Iam Estonian an english is not mother language I am not bad human..
Four years ago I would have been SOOO involved in this.. domestic competition, international challengers..etc etc etc but.. I just can’t get that… wow-Lochte-thing going at all…
He only has to get ~top 3 to make Pan Pacs, right? I wouldn’t be surprised if he sneaks on to the Pan Pacs team and then really blows up there to make the Worlds team.
Lochte 1:55.7, 4:10.6, but I’m hoping he’s much faster.
Even if he’s not, if he gets those times, he’s B A C K.
Even in a Caeleb Dressel World, Lochte is the most fun swimmer to predict/watch going into this summer. So much variability. And such an exciting litmus test for all the other swimmers in the world who swim non-sprint events and are wondering if a late 20s or 30s comeback is even real. I think he makes the team in both IMs and the 800 free relay. Kalisz should be thankful there are 3 spots for Pan Pacs because I think he is coming up 3rd in the 2IM. Dressel 1:53.7 this season (yes, really, and tbh that seems conservative since I think he could crush a 1:36 yards), and Lochte 1:54-mid to high.
edit: I really know how insane 1:53.7 is…. but is it crazier than 17.63? Is it, really? And 1:38.13 was done at the same meet where he was nowhere near at his peak.
He’d need to be 1:51 for us to even consider it being as crazy as a 17.6. Wake up people y’all need to realize what we’re witnessing with this dude. So exciting.
I really don’t see Lochte AND Dressel beating Kalisz. You’re probably being too optimistic about the Gators’ times.
if he qualifies for the 200FR relay, and they win. that’s a 5-peat at the olympics (’04, ’08, ’12, ’16_. how many other people have a 5-peat in anything at the olympics?
Steve Redgrave. Not sure if anyone else though. Redgrave’s achievement is considered one of the greatest in Olympic history, for obvious reasons.
so I googled it, he would be the first american in history to 5-peat anything (After Micheal Phelps, Carl Lewis and Al Oerter). there’s history to be made here.
edit: I listed the 4-peat guys FYI
Michael Phelps: 5-peat in 800 FR Olympic gold, and he made the 200 fly final 5 consecutive Olympics. Therese Alshammar: made the 50 Free Semifinal for 5 consecutive Olympics (00′-16′)
right, I was talking medals though. he could be the first american to medal (and gold at that) in a single event 5 times.
I’m pretty sure Dara has done that in relays. 84, 88, 92, 00, 08.
you are correct,
’84 – gold
’88 – gold
’92 – gold
’00 – silver
’08 – gold
all for the 4X100FR relay
if lochte gets gold he’d still be the first 5-peat gold winner but incredible to see the longevity of some of these american athlete’s
Only three people have ever 5-peated in any Olympic event.
Hungarian Fencer Aladár Gerevich holds the record (6 straight) by winning the team sabre competition in ’32, ’36, ’48, ’52 and ’60 (no Olympics in ’40 or ’44 because of WWII).
Pál Kovács was Gerevich’s teammate from ’36-’60 so he won five team sabre competitions in a row.
Reiner Klimke of West Germany latter won 5 straight team dressage competitions (’64-’88).

a lot incredible people here. Lochte can still be the first AMERICAN 5-peat GOLD medalist (beating out dara who had a silver in the mix)
just wow…..amazing how a vast majority of these 5-peats and 6-peats were during war times or after the 70’s. with a large chunk coming now in the 2000’s
