16 JULY 2018. Global swimwear brand, Speedo is celebrating its 90th anniversary and has embarked upon a number of collaborations and activities to mark this iconic milestone as part of its #WaterBabyForever campaign. These include; a project to inspire people to swim, an initiative to protect the ocean, and a partnership with UN Patron of the Oceans and renowned endurance swimmer, Lewis Pugh, attempting an unprecedented feat.

Lewis is embarking on The Long Swim, in which he will attempt to swim the full 560km length of the English Channel wearing just Speedo swimming trunks, a cap and goggles- to highlight the need to urgently protect oceans and British coastlines. Lewis started his epic challenge at Land’s End in Cornwall on 12th July, and will be stopping off in Plymouth on Saturday 21st July before he sets off again to complete his unprecedented journey in Dover towards the end of August.

In celebration of this, Speedo is providing 600 free swim passes at Tinside Lido for the local community throughout Saturday 21st July and will be joined by Speedo sponsored GB Swimmer and Double Olympic Silver Medalist from Rio 2016, Jazz Carlin. Also attending will be community swimming group Swim Dem Crew to help inspire more people to enjoy the fun and freedom of swimming.

Further underlining the brand’s commitment to swimming and love of water, Speedo has also partnered with national marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage. The charity (also a partner of Lewis Pugh on the Long Swim) is working with Speedo to coordinate five community beach cleans along the south coast to further highlight the dangers of materials like plastic entering oceans and remove marine litter. The Speedo x Surfers Against Sewage Beach Clean will take place at Bigbury-on-Sea on Friday 20th July from 12.00 noon and anyone interested can turn up and get involved.

Rob Hicking, Brand Director at Speedo said: “Our #WaterBabyForever campaign is all about celebrating our love of the water, whether it’s by protecting oceans, inspiring people to swim, or simply being at the side of swimmers as they achieve incredible feats. Speedo is passionate about inspiring people to swim and making swimming more accessible for everybody.
