If there were any questions about Caeleb Dressel at this meet, he put them to rest tonight. Dressel, who finished 6th in the 100 free earlier in the meet and took a narrow loss to Michael Andrew in the 50 fly, busted through the back half here to get the job done. Dressel is now on the Pan Pacs team, winning with the 10th fastest American performance ever in 50.50. That’s 3 tenths faster than he was last summer, and give how litte he seems to have rested for this, that Phelps World Record is in danger at Pan Pacs.
Jack Conger also finally secured his Pan Pacs spot. He was just a tenth off his lifetime best from march. After tying for 3rd in the 200 fly, Conger can have rest assured that he should make the Pan Pacs squad. After qualifying for Worlds last night with a win in the 50 fly, Andrew may have picked up a Pan Pacs spot here. We cant be 100% sure yet, but he’s in good shape with his lifetime best 51.68 for 3rd place.
Towson’s Jack Saunderson, who swam his lifetime best 51.48 this morning to qualify 1st, was a few tenths shy of that tonight in 51.88 for 4th. Cal’s Tom Shields, who swam both butterflies in Rio, was also sub-52 tonight in 51.94. Shields is out of Pan Pacs after placing 5th in both the 200 fly and 100 fly. Zach Harting, who qualified for Pan Pacs with a 2nd place finish in the 200 fly, clipped his best again tonight for 6th in 52.00.
He’s a desciple carrying out the Lord Dean’s work
Just wait until Hanson runs into Farris and whispers his sweet sweet Tao
“One stroke at a time”
“Dude the light is green, GO!”
I wish I could have a horrible swim and go 48.5…
I wish I could have a good swim and go 58.5…in yards
I meant 48.5…my degradation has not yet reached that point. Yet.
I was getting worried lol
I just think everyone should be made aware that Caeleb best Phelps 100 Fly time in Beijing….and he was only on a small rest
To be fair, Phelps wasn’t a sprinter, and at that point, he wasn’t really rested.
Phelps wasn’t a sprinter no, but the goat still did 47.5 and 49.8 in in free and fly…
At the Olympics it is not about the time it is about the win, the gold medal.
Everyone assumes Dressel is not rested or rested very little. If that’s the case, he should have some major drops at Pan Pacs.
It’s also entirely possible that he’s more rested than everyone thinks, and just isn’t swimming well.
I think it’s likely he’s midway through a taper. Still missing the start and wall strength and some of the closing speed that would come later in the rest cycle, but this gives him a Troy a chance to figure out how to adjust slightly over the next week and a half and have him set for pan pacs
Sooooooo rested or untested? I really like that Caeleb doesn’t make excuses for his poorer swims but I’d still like to know
Do we know why he wasn’t at the press conference before the meet? Seems odd.
Yes, it would have been interesting to get his take at press conference on the Lochte suspension since wasn’t Lochte in his training group? Also the Cox suspension. Perhaps that accounts for his unavailability. I remember after one of his fast races at NCAAs, Dressel had talked openly about using “Preworkout” supplement (whatever that is) and wonder if he has backed off that stuff at this meet.
Either unrested or only slightly rested, peaking twice in two weeks is tough! Swimming through the meet at this level – for those few who can actually contemplate doing so! – is always a risk, as we are seeing yet again. And underlying it all – whose great idea was it to hold nationals just two weeks before Pan Pacs?
Wait did Dressel get his braces off? Those pearly whites tho.
Why did he have to get braces at age 21 anyway? In all his earlier social media photos as a young person/teenager, his teeth were very straight.
Human Growth Hormone.
I don’t know the actual answer, but but braces can treat jaw issues, not just teeth. Or else maybe he got wisdom teeth out and teeth started to move from spaces…could be any number of reasons.
Caeleb Dressel once had a bad swim, just to see how it felt.
Sounds like the dos echi man the most interesting man in the world
Correct – that was the inspiration.
