2018 Youth Olympic Games: Day 5 Prelims Live Recap

2018 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

The penultimate preliminary session from Buenos Aires will feature heats in the women’s 50 free and 100 fly, the men’s 100 free and 50 breast, and early timed final heats in the men’s 800 free (with the top seeded heat swimming with finals).

Highlighting the session will be heavy hitters Kristof MilakAndrei MinakovThomas Ceccon and Daniil Markov in the men’s 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly winner Sara Junevik in the women’s 100 fly, 100 free champ Barbora Seemanova in the women’s 50 free, and the red hot Sun Jiajun in the men’s 50 breast.

Men’s 800 Free Timed Final (Early Heats)

Ahmed Ayoub Hafnaoui improved his personal best by a wide margin to post the top time out of the early heats in the men’s 800 free, doing so in just the 2nd heat out of three. Hafnaoui dominated heat 2 for a final time of 8:04.43, and it stood up as the top swimmer in heat 3 was five seconds back. The top-8 seeds will swim with finals tonight.

Jose Lopes of Portugal was just a few tenths outside of his lifetime best to take heat 3 in 8:09.43, putting him 2nd overall, while Bartlomiej Koziejko of Poland was also sub-8:10 in 8:09.97. The top seed of the early heats was Spain’s Marcos Gil Corbacho, and after leading the way for much of heat 3, he faded back to 5th in 8:12.93 and now sits 6th overall. His best time stands at 8:04.71 from the Spanish Championships in July.

100 freestyle gold medalist Barbora Seemanova asserted herself as the one to beat once again here in the 50 free, putting up the top time in the prelims out of the final heat in 25.44. Seemanova, who broke the Czech National Record when she won the 100 free, already owns the 50 record with her 25.06 from the 2017 European Junior Championships where she won gold.

Slovenian Neza Klancar, who also set a national record in the 100 free where she won bronze, was 2nd to Seemanova in the heat in 25.65 and heads into the semis with a share of the #2 seed along with 100 free silver medalist Yang Junxuan. Klancar currently holds the Slovenian Record in the 50 at 25.35.

American Kate Douglass was 25.71 out of the final heat to take the 4th seed overall, and Ireland’s Mona McSharry won the first circle-seeded heat in 25.76 over Japan’s Mayuka Yamamoto (25.80).

Korea’s Lee Yooyeon threw down an impressive 50.11 out of the penultimate heat in the men’s 100 freestyle, nearly identical to his entry time, as he heads into the semi-finals with the #1 seed. He managed to hold off Andrei Minakov in the heat, as the Russian negative split the race 25.13/25.07 to come in for a time of 50.20 which put him 4th overall.

Jakub Kraska of Poland then edged Kristof Milak by .01 of the win in the last heat, 50.17 to 50.18, as they advance in 2nd and 3rd. Brazilian Andre Luiz Calvelo de Souza, who has a 48-point relay leg under his belt at the meet, won the other circle-seeded heat in 50.24 which ranks him 5th heading into the semis.

Germany’s Angelina Koehler was the only swimmer to close sub-32 and it got her the only time under a minute in the women’s 100 fly heats, hitting a time of 59.99. She set her personal best in July at 59.39.

Polina Egorova of Russia won the first circle-seeded heat for the 2nd seed in 1:00.23, just ahead of Belarus’ Anastasiya Shkurdai (1:00.48) who tied for gold at the European Juniors in July.

Natalie Kan won heat 3 out of lane 8 for the 5th fastest time overall in 1:01.06, while the top seed coming into the meet (and 50 fly winner) Sara Junevik qualified back in 9th in 1:01.50. She comes in with a best of 58.89 from last summer’s World Juniors.

100 breast winner Sun Jiajun blasted a 27.91 out of the last heat of the men’s 50 breast for the top seed heading into tonight’s semis, two-tenths off his lifetime best of 27.71.

South African Michael Houlie, who opened his 100 breast semi-final in a blazing 27.43, won the penultimate heat and was the only other swimmer to get under 28 seconds in 27.99.

The other 100 breast medalists Taku Taniguchi (28.28) and Denis Petrashov (28.43) were next up in 3rd and 4th, while reigning European Junior champion Vladislav Gerasimenko was back in 29.03 for the 13th spot. 200m gold medalist Yu Hanaguruma of Japan took the 16th and final spot into the semi-finals in 29.18.

So Kliment Kolesnikov is NOT swimming the 100 free then, after a 48.0 leadoff in the men’s 4×100? Too many events?

Michael Pickett in 100 free is from New Zealand. He just trains in Australia.
