Virginia Opens ACC Action with Pittsburgh

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host Pittsburgh in a dual meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center on Saturday (Oct. 20). The Cavaliers will open the meet with diving events at 9 a.m. followed by swimming events at noon.

In the Rankings

• Both Cavalier teams are ranked inside the top 15 in the latest College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America’s poll.

• The women’s team enters at No. 10, posting the second-highest ranking within the conference. The Cavalier men start the season at No. 15.

Against the Panthers

• This weekend’s meet is the third consecutive matchup between the two programs.

• The two teams met last season in a tri-meet at the Aquatic and Fitness Center with LSU. Virginia swept the meet, topping both the Panthers (women 218-130; men 196.5-155.5) and Tigers (women 251-97; men 222-131) in the two-day competition. The Cavaliers posted 20 first-place finishes at the meet.

• Virginia swept the dual meet against Pitt in 2016. The Cavaliers defeated the Pittsburgh women 187-108 and topped the men 186.5-108.5.

Season Splashes

• In the opening two weeks of the season, Virginia has seen two student-athletes earn ACC weekly honors.

• Junior Morgan Hill (Olney, Md.) opened the season with three-individual and one relay first-place finish against Penn State, earning her Swimmer of the Week honors for week one.

• Junior Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) captured Diver of the Week honors for the second week of competition, after tying as the diving point total winner at the SMU Classic.

Last Time Out

• The Cavalier women sent eight swimmers and one diver to the SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas last weekend. The team finished third at the meet with the help of a first-place finish from diver Sydney Dusel. Paige Madden (Mobile, Ala.) and Megan Moroney (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, respectively.

• The men’s team last competed in the program’s season opener against Penn State. The Cavaliers defeated the Nittany Lions 171-121. Freshman Lewis Burras (Dubai) and Casey Storch (Great Falls, Va.) led UVA, winning two individual events at the meet.

The Panthers

• Both teams head into the weekend with a 1-2 record.

•The Panthers fell to Florida State, ranked 20th on the men’s side and 25th on the women’s side, and Georgia Tech in Tallahassee, Fla.

• Pitt swept George Washington at home last week 199-96 in the women’s meet and 199-93 in the men’s meet. The team won 28 of the 32 events in the competition.
