EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its weekly awards on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Iona College sophomore Willow Lopez-Silvers has been named the Female Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her career.
In Iona’s annual quad invitational against St. Francis Brooklyn, Sacred Heart and Wagner, Lopez-Silvers won the 200-yard freestyle at 1:56.27. She beat out Terrier Ana Montes Decoa Zapianin by over one second in the resounding victory. She had 50-yard splits of 26.92, 29.60, 30.01 and 29.74. Elsewhere in the meet Lopez-Silvers finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at 54.03. She was also part of the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay where she had the fastest laps among the quartet.
Lopez-Silvers is the first student-athlete to earn the recognition since current junior Alyssa Chain was honored on Oct. 11, 2017.
Iona’s next meet is at home on Saturday, Oct. 27 against MAAC rival Bryant. The tough litmus-test begins at 1 p.m.
