Malaysian, Chinese Divers Shine in Kuala Lumpur Diving Grand Prix

Malaysian and Chinese divers took all gold medals at stake in Kuala Lumpur (MAS) this weekend (November 9-11), as the capital was hosting the fifth of seven legs of the FINA Diving Grand Prix 2018.

National star Ooi Tze Liang claimed gold in the men’s 3m springboard with 428.45 points, while Croatia’s Hrvoje Brezovac placed second with 350.30 and Timothy Lee of Singapore closed the podium in 320.85.

The men’s platform event was won by China’s Duan Yu with 437.45, the best score of the meet. He was followed by teammate Wang Zewei (398.60) and Jonathan Chan (SGP, 357.35).

Springboard winner Liang, together with partner Muhammad Syafiq Puteh (MAS) grabbed the gold in the 3m synchro (368.64). Collecting 350.73 and 336.06 points, Timothy Lee / Mark Lee (SGP) and Juraj Melsa / Hrvoje Brezovac (CRO) secured the silver and bronze respectively.

China’s Wang Zewei / Duan Yu were the best in the synchro platform event (371.04). Australian pair Sam Fricker / Brodie Scapens were second (320.31) and local heroes Bertrand Anak Lises / Enrique Anak Harold stepped on the last step of the podium with 268.47 points.

The two individual women’s events were topped by Chinese divers: Tong Ma took the springboard victory (287.95) and Xu Yijin collected 336.10 points in the 10m. Malaysia and Australia then shared the silver and bronze medals on offer in both events.

As the only participating team, local divers Loh Zhiayi / Ong Ker Ying earned the women’s synchro 3m gold (250.56).

The Diving Grand Prix next stops in Gold Coast, Australia, from November 15-18 for the penultimate leg of 2018.
