Rhode Island Women, Providence Men Take Harold Anderson Invite Titles

How it Happened
For the first time in program history, Rhode Island extended its streak to 6-0 after winning the 23rd Annual Harold Anderson Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The Rams continued to dominate the relay events, as they have through the start of the season. The quartet of Kaitlyn Bansky, Nicole Petta, Caitlin Guccione and Eliza Anderson won the 400-yard medley relay, with the other two Rhody entries placing fourth and eighth.

Nicole Petta and Caitlin Guccione continued to rack up wins in the individual events. After winning the 100-yard breastroke during Saturday’s racing, Petta claimed today’s 200-yard breaststroke title. Guccione won yesterday’s 100-yard butterfly event, as well as the 200-yard butterfly this afternoon.

Through 40 events, the Rams scored 843.50 points, besting the second-place team by a margin of over 100 points.

Standouts from the Pool

  • Junior Mackenna Dunn earned a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle event.
  • Freshman Kaitlyn Bansky finished second in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Emma Grace Pecha finished fourth.
  • Junior Cassidy Fries had a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, while sophomores Brooke Kelley and Rebecca Younts finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
  • Senior Eliza Anderson finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle event. Sophomore Kelly Blake finished eighth.
  • The team of junior Mackenna Dunn, senior Grace Kneller, sophomore Kelly Blake and senior Eliza Anderson came in third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Rhody’s other entries finished ninth and eleventh.
  • Junior Katy Evans led the Rhode Island divers with a third-place finish in the 3-meter dive. Junior Alyssa Campone finished sixth.

What’s Next
Rhody will have a month off before returning to the Tootell Aquatic Center to swim against Wagner on Sunday, Jan. 13. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Assumption rounded out the Harold Anderson Invitational with a first place finish in the 400 free relay along with a total of eight top two finishes on the weekend to earn an overall second place finish in the three-day meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

– The 400 free relay team was the star of the third day of competition composed of Abbey Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Anne Guadalupi (Augusta, Maine/Cony), Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa/Clarendon) and Natalia Kaczor (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) who swam to a first place finish with a time of 3:32.94. The same group swam to a second place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:56.19.

– Guadalupi ended the weekend with a third place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:09.05) while Holmes earned fourth in the 50 free with a time of 24.30.

– Nicholls set a new team record with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.99 while Kaczor earned fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.53) and Payton Horton (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/St. Dominic’s) earned fourth in the 200 free (1:57.05).

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

– The Hounds earned second with a team score of 706.0 points behind URI with 843.5 and ahead of Providence with 630.5. Holy Cross finished fourth with 582.0 followed by Bryant in fifth (472.0) and Maine University of Orono in sixth (386.0).

UP NEXT:

– The Hounds are back in the pool Friday, November 30 when they swim in the three-day Gompei Invitational at WPI at 4 p.m.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Kingston, R.I. to compete in the Harold Anderson Invitational. The meet took place on Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at the University of Rhode Island. The men finished in first place and the women’s team placed third.

Record Weekend
Freshman Justin Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) had record setting performances in the 200 Yard Butterfly and the 400 Yard IM. Viotto’s 1:50.20 time in the 200-yard butterfly broke the previous school record set by Sebastian Melendez in 2018 (1:52.49). The freshman also broke John Fatigati‘s 2014 record in the 400-yard IM with his 4:00.70, previously set at 4:01.06.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team won three relays and sophomore Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) won three individual events over three days at the Harold Anderson Invitational.

Bryant finished the three-day meet in second with 807 points.

How it Happened Friday

  • Junior Robert Davis (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed 3rd in the 1650 free (16:46.84).
  • The quartet of senior Matt Zichelli (Glen Ridge, N.J.), senior Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.), sophomore Matthew Mastroianni (Glastonbury, Conn.) and classmate Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) finished 2nd in the 200 free relay (1:27.10).

How it Happened Saturday

  • Bryant picked up a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Mays, Boyle, graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.) and Zichelli posted a time of 1:30.72.
  • Mays then went on to win two individual events, finishing first in the 200 IM (1:55.49) and the 100 back (51.30).
  • Ornelas had a good individual day as well, finishing first in the 100 fly (49.00) and second in the 100 breast (58.83).
  • Zichelli and Boyle both picked up third-place finishes, Zichelli in the 100 free and Boyle in the 100 breast.
  • Bryant swept the 3-meter diving event. Sophomore Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) won with a score of 263.15 and was followed by junior Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) and freshman Evan Clark (Doylestown, Pa.).
  • The Black and Gold closed the day with a second-place finish in the 800 free relay from Ornelas, Mays, Davis and Mastroianni.

How it Happened Sunday

  • The 400 medley relay team of Mays, Boyle, Ornelas and Zichelli took home first place with a time of 3:26.10.
  • Mays then posted a victory in the 200 back, winning the event with a time of 1:49.76.
  • Ornelas went on to finish second in the 200 fly (1:50.96), while Boyle placed third in the 200 breast (2:12.17).
  • It was also a good day for Zichelli as he finished 2-3 with Allen in the 50 free.
  • The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the 1-meter dive as Hazlewood completed his sweep of the weekend with a score of 272.70. Vogel finished second.
  • Bryant closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. Allen, Zichelli, Mays and Ornelas teamed up to win the event with a time of 3:08.55.
