18-year-old Isabel Ivey from Lake Swim in Florida won the girls’ high point award and 18-year-old Jake Foster from Mason Manta Rays in Ohio won the boys’ trophy at the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East in Greensboro, North Carolina over the weekend.

Ivey earned the girls’ high point title with 90 points and without winning a single gold medal. She swam 6 individual events and was a member of 3 relay squads (although relay results don’t count toward high point awards). Ivey was an A-finalist in all six events; her highest finishes were a silver medal in the 100 free and a pair of bronzes in the 100 back and 200 IM. She took 4th in the 100 fly and 5th in the 50 free. Ironically, her lowest finish (7th) came in the event in which she is the meet record-holder: the 200 free. Ivey finished the meet with new lifetime bests in the 50 free, 50 back, and 100 fly.

17-year-old Kelly Pash of Carmel Swim Club finished second in the girls’ standings with 73 .5 points, a half-point ahead of Nashville Aquatic Club’s Alex Walsh, 17, and 2.5 points ahead of Walsh’s sister Gretchen Walsh, 15, and 14-year-old Charlotte Hook of TAC Titans who both scored 71 points. Another 14-year-old from TAC Titans, Claire Curzan, was right behind them with 70 points for 6th place. Also scoring in the top-10 were Kate Douglass of Chelsea Piers, Nashville’s Ella Nelson, and Floridians Mary Smutny from South Florida Aquatic Club and Talia Bates from Gator Swim Club.

Jake Foster led a 1-2-3 Mason Manta Rays sweep of the top three spots in the boys’ meet, although with 80 points to his name, Foster was all alone at the top. He finished with 11 more points than 16-year-old Adam Chaney and 20 more than his brother, 17-year-old Carson Foster.

The older Foster brother swam 5 individual events. He placed second in the 100/200 breast and the 200/400 IM and took 7th in the 200 fly. The 100 breast, 200 fly, and 400 IM times were all lifetime bests. Foster also contributed to four winning and one runner-up relay during the four-day meet.

In addition to the Manta Rays, Ohio was represented on the top-10 list by Dayton Raiders’ Owen Conley. Dynamo’s Ian Grum and SwimAtlanta’s Jake Magahey came from Georgia, while Preston Forst of Enfinity Aquatic Club, John Walker from SwimMAC, and Noah Henderson from Star Aquatics represented the home state of North Carolina. Jack Alexy, one of only two 15-year-olds to score points in the boys’ meet, is from Somerset Hills YMCA in New Jersey.

No club had both a male and a female swimmer finish in their respective top-10.
