While competing on day 4 of the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships, 25-year-old Martina Carraro cranked out a new Italian National Record in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

After establishing herself as a viable contender with the 3rd seed after heats in 1:05.06, Carraro dipped under the 1:05.00 threshold for the very first time in tonight’s semi-final. Racing her way to 6th place overall in the semi’s, Carraro produced a time of 1:04.87, becoming the fastest Italian woman ever.

Splitting 30.49/34.38, Carraro overtook the previous NR held by Arianna Castiglioni from her swim at the 2017 Short Course European Championships. We’ll see what Carraro has left in the tank come the final tomorrow night.

This is the 2nd event for Carraro, who already took bronze in the 50m breaststroke here in Hangzhou. She passed a milestone in that event as well, becoming the first Italian woman ever to cross the 30-second barrier in the semi-finals (29.79) before registering 29.59 to land on the podium.
