U.S. (or even FINA) Masters Male and Female of the Year?
Masters swimmer of the year? Come on SwimSwam! Don’t ignore the National and world record-setters of 2018
I’d like to see:
1. Para swimmer of the year
2. Masters swimmer of the year
3. Top 10 swimmers retiring this year
4. Best Katie Ledecky of the year
Just curious that Canada gets a special category but Australia gets lumped with “Oceania”
My guess is that they wanted to give out American swimmer of the year which would ruin a North American category so it was necessary to give Canada their own.
Good point but I think USA would have dominated a North America category anyway especially in the men’s side ..
Even on the women’s side though, USA still would have dominated the North American category. Canada’s best female swimmers from the last three years, Ruck, Masse and Oleksiak would have all been beaten by ledecky because she had huge success over multiple events.
The biggest oceanic countries are australia and new zealand. From memory New Zealand’s most recent swimmer who medaled internationally was Lauren Boyle, who retired last year, so Oceania effectively is just Australia.
Lewis clareburt medaled at comm games this year but doesn’t deserve the award over Chalmers
Male breakout is James Wilby for me;
– 5 Individual breaststroke medals (3 commomwealths, 2 Euros)
– 3rd fastest ‘textile’ 100br of all time
– Only Peaty & Chupkov finished ahead of him over the Olympic distances in championship races
Simona Quadarella for female breakout:
– Sweep of golds at Europeans 400/800/1500
– 800/1500 times put her right in the international medal mix
I don’t think quadarella will win female breakout, she won the bronze in the 1500 in Budapest. She was excellent this year but she’s already proved that she’s a medal contender.
Florian Wellbrock is my choice. From no name directly to European Champion and world no.1 in 1500 free. You don’t see this kind of breakout often in distance events.
Romanchuck last year was as amazing
Wellbrock was my 2nd choice. My reasons for putting Wilby ahead were:
– Bigger % improvement on previous best times
– Won more medals
– Higher in all time lists for his respective ‘best event’
We should do top 25 swimmers like Tom Wildridge used to do!
Male Jr for kolesnikov
Breakout tough one, urlando Scheffer winnigton correa
Race of the year 800 free relay or proud wr?
Proud wr? What do you mean?
Textile wr 21,11 50 free
John Shebat for comeback of the year
