Cate & Bronte Campbell Race Open Water

Almost 3500 swimmers participated in the 36th annual Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic today, February 3rd, in New South Wales. Among the competitors were two Swimming Australia icons in sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell, who took part in the 1k race, their first dabble into open water.

“All smiles before our first foray into open water swimming…surprisingly still smiles at the end of it (it was only the 1km 😛)! Such a great day raising money and awareness for the @mndandme foundation,” read Cate’s Instagram post prior to the race this morning. In addition to the 1k, there were also 2k and 5k swims that spanned from Shelly Beach to Manly Beach.

The sisters represented well, with Bronte taking the open 1k division in 12:22.22, with sister C1 just behind in 12:41.

In the elite division of the same race, it was another family affair, as a trio of sisters captured the top 3 spots, with Kimberley Doyle taking the win, with Emily Doyle coming in runner-up, while Kimberley’s twin, Katelynn, rounded out the top 3. Emily also won the 2k distance.

For the men, Declan Guildea was the elite 1k winner, while Will Gray earned the 1k open win.

The Campbell sisters are still settling into New South Wales as their new home after following their Coach Simon Cusack to the New South Wales Institute of Sport.

no need to eat more to swim fast – just the right ingredients that fit a well trained diet .

I hope she’s okay. She has admitted to struggling with eating/body image in the past. https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/cate-campbell-reveals-battle-to-be-skinny/story-e6freuy9-1227291283186

Could be the angle of the shot, all three girls look a little distorted.
As for a lovely gentle swim, anyone who has swum this enormous race will tell you it like a washing machine- it probably creates a tidal wave that can be felt in LA a few hours later!

Please don’t ignore the presence of Ellie Cole at this event.

Please excuse me VGM, what are you asking for here? An addendum of the article? How would any of us know of Paralympian Ellie’s participation (or attendance if she didn’t swim) if she was neither mentioned by you above nor in the article, especially for those of us not Aussies or in that neck of the woods?

i thought coaches could 1. recognise a swimmer who is in the picture in the article or 2. check the entry list or results to check. but in this case maybe not. the internet does cross the ocean. and anyway the fabulous Ellie Cole, well she is in that particular squad, which has been mentioned here before.

Perhaps, just perhaps, this was just an innocent update report on the Campbell sisters and their long time coach move to Sydney participating in a charity swim? Not everything that’s reported out of Australia has to include Ellie flipping Cole!

Like a fairytale. When it is -40 outside it is like a dream to be among those 3500 who are enjoying swimming in warm and gentle ocean.
