After breaking 2 National Age Group Records as part of a relay already this weekend in Cary (200 free relay, 400 free relay), Claire Curzan of the TAC Titans has added another, individually in the 200 fly.
Swimming in the final, Curzan swam a 1:55.64, which took out the 13-14 girls’ record of 1:55.67 done by Curzan’s training partner Charlotte Hook at the Speedo Winter Junior East Championships in December.

Curzan’s previous best time was a 1:56.05 done at a local meet 4 weeks ago. Coming into this season her best was a 1:59.9, and coming into 2019 her best was a 1:58.7 from November. Prior to this 200 fly swim, her best performances had been mostly in sprint races, including a National Age Group Records in the 100 fly, though her 200 back time of 1:53.09 at Juniors was enough to show that she has the endurance. Curzan now holds, or shares via a relay, 5 National Age Group Records (up from 2: 1 individual and 1 relay, that she had at the start of the weekend).
Curzan hasn’t yet lost a final at this meet in the 13-14 age group. In addition to leading off 3 relay victories, Curzan has individually won 4 races:
- 200 free – 1:46.51
- 100 fly – 51.69
- 200 fly – 1:55.64 (*National Age Group Record)
- 50 free – 22.45
what hs class is she? 2022?
She’s a freshman, so that puts her on 2022.
Jeepers! College level times for a 14 year old.
That has been happening for decades. Really nothing surprising there.
Yes, it’s true that we’ve seen this before. But, that doesn’t make it any less spectacular.
The TAC girls also went under the old NAG tonight in the 400 medley relay, with their 3:42.13 far superceding NOVA’s NAG of 3:44.77.
However, they didn’t win the race. SwimMAC Carolina’s team went 3:40.43. Morgan Razewski, Grace Rainey, Kiley Wilhelm & Maya Gendzel.
Seeing one NAG is enough for a night. Two in the same race? I think I’ll call it a career.
That 50 free-200 fly combo is awfully impressive. We seem to be in the middle of some kind of Golden Age of NAG record-setting, especially on the female side.
Janet Hu did this a few years ago with the 17-18 NAGs for the 50 free and 2 fly
I’m amazed that they’re breaking the relay NAGs without using a girl (I assume because she aged up) who was 1:55 in the 200 fly 2 months ago.
I believe she’s aged up since.
Charlotte Hook has a January birthday from what I can tell from a quick search of her times.
Hope to see her and Curzan go at it at a meet together. Claire didn’t swim the 200 fly at Winter Juniors since she was doing the 200 back instead. If the event schedules coincide, watch out.
