MEDFORD, Mass. – Colleen Doolan, who graduated from Tufts University in February 2019 and was a four-year member of the Jumbo women’s swimming team, has been selected as a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, Doolan was awarded a $10,000 scholarship for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.
A biology and community health major, Doolan graduated early with summa cum laude honors. She is currently working in clinical research at Boston Children’s Hospital and will enter the Tufts University School of Medicine in the fall. The scholarship will be put towards her Medical Doctor and Master of Public Health tuition at Tufts Medical School.
A three-time NCAA qualifier and honorable mention All-American during her career on the Tufts swimming team, Doolan was part of the 800 free relay whose ninth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships was the best relay finish in the Tufts program’s recent history. She also swam with the 400 freestyle relay which had a school-record time of 3:28.22 at NCAA’s. Doolan was 21st individually in the 200 butterfly (2:05.24) at the national championships.
In her freshman season, Doolan achieved honorable mention All-American accolades with a 12th-place performance during the final of the 200 butterfly (2:04.11) at the 2016 NCAA meet. She is also a three-time New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference performer for finishing in the top three at the conference championship.
Twice during her years at Tufts Doolan took trips to developing nations to provide medical services. Last August with the Little by Little Medical Team organization she worked as a non-medical volunteer in Gramothe, Haiti. She supported the clinical team as a medical scribe in the woman’s health clinic, and also collected and organized data about the patient population to be reported to Haiti Ministry of Health. During the summer of 2016, she went on a Projects Abroad Medical Internship at Cape Coast, Ghana. She triaged incoming patients and provided care based on physician instructions, provided wound care in the community leprosy camp, schools, and hospital and performed health screenings, taught CPR, and provided health education in the community.
A member of Tufts’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Doolan was on SAAC’s Jumbo Experience committee.
