Emily Escobedo is a competitive swimmer that represents the United States internationally.
High School
From her freshmen year of high school in 2010 to her junior year in 2012 she dropped seven seconds in the 100 Breast and 23 seconds in the 200 Breast to qualify for Junior Nationals, and then she qualified for 2012 Olympic Trials in the 200. At the 2012 Trials, Escobedo placed 58th 200 Breast (2:36.07).
Being close to family was paramount, so she wanted to be within a four-hour drive of her home in New Rochelle, New York, eliminating all of the top 25 teams. She wanted a tightknit team with caring coaches like at her club, the Condors under Jon Hulbert. Plus, “I was young for my grade so most college coaches thought I was a junior and didn’t contact me until after I had already made a decision. In the spring I started receiving letters from some of the big programs.” Eventually she settled on UMBC because it gave her that sense of family that was so important to her and which she would be leaving behind.

2013-2014
Escobedo made history in her first year at UMBC. At the American East Championships, she swept the 100 (1:01.58) and 200 breast (2:12.11), as well as helped UMBC to victories in the 200 and 400 medley relays. All 4 races were school records. For her accomplishments, Escobedo was awarded the most outstanding female of the meet. A week later, at the ECAC Champs at Navy, she swam a 2:10.05 in the 200 breast to qualify for the NCAA Championships. At the NCAA’s, she swam the 100 breast (1:01.93), 200 breast 2:11.15), and 200 IM (2:00.25, school record).
2014-2015
Emily continued to improve her sophomore year, and made history at UMBC by being the first swimmer to earn back-to-back invites to the NCAA championships. At her conference meet, she swept her individual events, taking home gold in the 200 IM (1:59.10), 100 breast (1:01.01) and 200 breast (2:10.54), earning her a 2nd straight America East Most Outstanding Swimmer title. At the NCAA’s, she made history again by becoming the first retriever to score at the championships, taking 7th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:09.32, a new school record.
2015-2016
Escobedo scored a 3rd straight NCAA invite, and landed in the A-final of the 200 breast. She placed 3rd overall in the final, crushing her own school record with a time of 2:06.21. She also broke the 1:00 barrier for the first time in her career with a 59.71. For her accomplishments at the NCAA’s, she was named the American East Swimmer of the Year.
2016-2017
Escobedo saved the best for last, returning the NCAA meet her senior year and leaving her mark. She finished 3rd once again in the 200 Breast, but dropped down to a 2:05.20, once again demolishing her own UMBC school record. She also scored in all 3 of her events at NCAA’s for the first time in her career, touching 12th in the 200 IM (1:55.13) and 9th in the 100 breast (58.48).
National/International Competition
2018 Summer Nationals
At the 2018 Summer nationals, Escobedo finished 4th in the 200 Breast (2:25.22), 16th in the 50 breast (32.23), and 54th in the 200 IM (2:18.48). She also swam the 100 breast but was disqualified in prelims. For her placing in the 200 breast, she earned a spot on the World University Games roster.
2019 World University Games
At the 2019 WUG’s, Escobedo advanced to the finals of the 200 breast, where she placed 2nd overall in a career best of 2:23.65. This marked her first major international medal. She also swam on the 4×100 medley relay final, splitting 1:06.72 to help Team USA win gold.
