Men’s 100 Breaststroke – Semi-finals
- World Record – 57.10, Adam Peaty (GBR), 2018
- Meet Record – 59.53, Igor Borysik (UKR), 2009
USA’s Ian Finnerty became the 13th American to break one minute in the 100-meter breaststroke on Thursday at the World University Games in Napoli. Heading into the meet his personal best stood at 1:00.09, dating from 2017 U.S. Open. In morning heats he went 1:00.78 to qualify eighth for semi-finals. But he brought the big guns in the evening and was out like a shot from the outset. He turned with a commanding lead at the 50 and came home for his first sub-minute 100 breast, going 59.51. That took .02 off the Universiade meet record and made Finnerty the 11th-fastest American performer in history.

It makes you realise how exceptional Peaty is, that the reigning NCAA champion, the only guy ever under 50 in SCY, can have a break out Long Course meet and still need to drop a further 2.5 seconds to compete for global golds.
Congratulations Ian!
*Brandon Fischer swam :59.8 at Clovis in mid June.
Even a guy from Turkey is around 59 Mid ? jeeeeeeez , so much diversity & Different Nationalities dipping under 1 Minute 😀 . Apart from the brits who got 2 in that list , only Usa has 3 swimmers under 1.00 Minute for this year . Otherwise , its all wide spread …. so .interesting
Cody is only 10th in the world – first Us in that list – the level is just impressive this year . Well done Ian , u got the mojo , keep riding that wave of improvements . 59.2 in final ?
Poor Marcus Titus.
Looks like he backed off hallway through first 50. Tempo changed a little and he was looking like usual. Expect maybe 59 low 58 high
No I did not see him back off at all. Can’t back off in a 100 breast and expect to make the final. He was winded at the end of the race.
Guess there isn’t anything to worry about Ol’ Longhorn…
